Country Of Origin : Africa (Lake Malawi)

Diet : Omnivorous, will accept all foods.
Tank Zone : All
Sex : Males are blue in the face with an orangey body females silver to black..
Temperament : Can be fairly aggressive when breeding otherwise fairly placid.
Breeding : Mouth brooder
Tank Setup : Rocky Malawi biotype
Temperature : 26°C
PH : 8 - 8.5
Hardness : 12°dH - 20°dH

General Information:

These fish are an excellent addition to any community Malawi tank, males get very vivid colours as they age.

These are a peaceful fish and it is recommended to not keep them with other aggressive fish. They are fairly easy to keep, though as with most fish you will need to keep your tank water very clean with regular water changes. Six (one male and 5 females) adults require a minimum tank size of 40 gallons but bigger if you can.

They are found in shallow to mid depths of the lake, so they require a lot of caves for the females but also a lot of space to swim. If you have a larger tank and are able to keep more than one male make sure you provide many rock caves. They also like subdued lighting.

Feeding:

They enjoy a good quality pellet or flake food, suplimented with brine shrimp, worm foods, daphna and beef heart.

Breeding:

Generally the same for all Malawians look after the water quality and they will breed. Very easy to breed fish if fed well and a cool water change is done, can easily cross, but kept in a species only tank you will soon have many.

These fish need to be about 3 inches long before they will start to breed. They breed like other mouth brooding cichlids. They like a flat piece of rock or slate to breed. The male will colour up and they will begin their mating ‘dance’ to attract a female. The female will have between 20 to 30 eggs. The females will hold their brood in their mouth for up to 4 weeks.
Adulthood is usually reached at about 1 year of age.
Males are the most colourful, they are blue with orange to red flanks. The male will not show colour until he reaches adulthood. The females and juveniles are silver with orange fins.

Comments:

An easily kept fish, that has several different color variations, depending on where it is collected from in the lake. They are not very aggressive, and should not be kept with other aggressive fish.
