I'm one who believes the Electorial College is not a fair representation of our individuality as American Citizens. The quick & easy explanantion of how it works and why we have it can be found in numerous places on the Internet however I'm fascinated by the serious lack of conversation regarding how inaccurate this sytem is, in choosing a President of the United States. The main reason I feel this way is, I hope you noticed during the General Election Campaign, many States get absolutely no attention by Candidates. Even during the Primaries, you constantly heard Mr. Obama , who I can refer to as President Elect, claim, it's all about the Delegates. Well the reason is simple, Barack Obama and his Handlers were keen to focus their resources solely on the areas that mattered most to assure victory. There have been many debates as to why the Electorial College should or should not remain intact. I'm convinced that the popular count is truly the one that matters most. One of the most important reasons for this conclusion is how Election Night is calculated. Considering a Candidate does extremely well in the Eastern States, He will amount enough Electorial Point to put him over the top long before Mid & Western States get to chime in with their results. This could and historically has proven to be a deterent for would be Voters. In other words, let's say based upon the layout of the Electorial College, a winner is called however as we witnessed in 2000 with Al Gore v George Bush, Mr. Gore ultimately won the popular count. What this is saying is, the majority of American Citizens wanted Al Gore as President Elect but their wishes did not matter. And once a winner is called, many people then decide it's no longer important to go to the Polls and cast their choice, which might have resulted in a reversal of that decision. However if we reverted to a popular vote count, we would have to wait until all the votes were counted before a Winner was called. Furthermore, when you look at States like Florida, it's conceiveable for a Candidate to focus their attention only in the most populated areas of that State such as with Florida this election. Even thought Mr. Obama won Florida, it shows he only won Florida by winning very small areas of the State's Landscape. 80% of Florida's Map is Red but houses the least amount of Voters because the larger cities of Florida are the one's that our lower income citizens live, due to employment availablility and social entitlement outlets. This Map illustrates the Electorial Number each State contributes to the overall total.
