Once you've found a Forum of your interest and decided that you want to join as a Member, you will find a link somewhere near the top left corner that refers to Log In or Register. You will need to click on Register if you want to join. This will take you to a page which ask certain questions regarding your name, address, age, email address, etc. If there is something in the fields that you don't understand or are not sure of such as your ICQ or URL, that could mean you don't have one. Usually, an asterick is adjacent to the required fields. Also on this page you will create a User ID and Password. If you get an error message while attempting to create a User ID, it could mean that the User ID you are trying to use, is already taken and you have to think of a different one. A valid email address is extremely important because all new memberships must be validated by sending out an email to the address you enter and you will click on the link within that email sent to you that tells the Administrator this is a valid email address. Once you've validated your email address, it will bring you back to the Board and at that time, you can Log-In as a Member. On the Main Page, you will see many Topics. You can either 1. Click on a topic you are interested in or 2. Start your own Topic, which is listed as New Topic located at the Top Right of the screen. So you've found a Topic that you are interested in and you click to read what's contained inside. The first topic entry is usually the person that started the Topic and all subsequent entries are responses or replies to that initial Post. In the Message Board World, a Topic is typically referred to as a Thread that can go on and on until there's nothing more that anybody wishes to add to this subject. Many times depending on how someone replies to the issue, the subject matter will change and there starts a whole new set of issues. Example: User One - Starts a topic concerning the loss of jobs at Electric Boat, Inc. and people are discussing that issue until somebody writes, "Well I work at the United Illuminating and they are laying off like crazy" So now another person may Post a reply to that stating they work at the UI and he/she hasn't noticed any layoffs. So now people may begin to discuss the UI or layoffs in general and the issue of Electric Boat falls away from the center of discussion. When Posting a New Topic you have to give it a Heading or Title in order for others to see what the subject matter is about. Try to use a good discription other than "Question" or "Does Anybody Know? " because this doesn't tell anybody what is contained inside that topic. Not to say it doesn't happen but it really isn't the best way to get responses. |

New Topic - which is what you click if you want to start a new topic or thread. This of course is not what you do if you are attempting to reply or respond to a topic already started. Here you would Post a New Topic with Heading and supply your thoughts ot comments in hopes that others will respond to the issue you've set forth. Quote - The Quote Button is used for directly commenting on a reply from someone else. Example: - I am curious as to why there are no lights continuously along our Highways while driving at night here in Connecticut. It is obvious to me that a well lit highway would increase safety on our roads and aide Law Officials.
If you wanted to respond to my previous Post directly comenting on what I said, you would use the quote button and this would be the results. |
