Let me ask this question> You are the Mayor of a very small Northern Calif. Community that touts an official population of 1,400 people. The largest official industry in the area is the Lumber Industry that generates a modest income for the township that is lessening over the years with advancements in synthetic & alternative wood products. However there is another source of income that filters into the town that has not gone down over the years but instead increasingly climbs upwards. This is the Marijuana Growing Industry. So in your Town, you have a fair large contingency of Growers that live in the mountains, raise their families participate in Community activities and throughout the year and especially during Harvest season, files into town and cleans it out of supplies. They buy new trucks, build additions onto their homes, buy more land, clean out the local markets, pretty much anything and everything a person needs to buy to manage and sustain their lives and the lives of the families, they buy, Everybody makes good money during harvest season. For the Old Timers and Citizens that don't participate in growing marijuana, they still enjoy the fruits of that labor through the filtering of money that comes into town as a result of this crop. The town, the whole region gets fat and this is the pattern year after year. The local law enforcement is very much aware of this fundamental and takes a position that, he could do his job, go up into the mountains and arrest everybody he finds. Commission a crew of Agents to chop down all the plants at harvest time and make life miserable for everybody or he can wait until the Town tells him, the Growers are a huge problem that threatens the very fabric of their society and they need to be rid of them in order to re-estate goodness & purity back into the lives of Law abiding townsfolk. But along with that goodness & purity comes poverty, instability, hardship, increased crime due to theft, muggings, alcoholism from depression and other symptoms borne from stress related issues because all the money is gone. So what do you do when the Federal Government calls you up on the phone and ask if you need a Task Force to deal with the infestation of Pot Farmers that may be in your part of the State? Well what you are going to do is what many of the local law enforcement do each year. They provide a resounding "No Thank You" to our Feds. "We don't seem to have that problem here, you might need to go further north because our little community doesn't have any Pot Farmers. And while you're telling the Feds this, the local merchants are tapping you on the shoulders with big smiles. So why is our Federal Government still keeping Marijuana illegal if it has been proven that Marijuana provides none of the problems that smoking cigarettes brings on us? And smoking pot doesn't seem to contribute to violent behavior or aggression like drinking alcohol? Actually in all accounts, smoking pot does nothing more than make the smoker, either eat, sleep, laugh, act silly or drive slow. Well if you'd like to know why Marijuana remains illegal when there's no evidence to support any ill effects, you need look no further than the Growers themselves. Would you believe it's the very growers that employ Lobbyist in Washington to make certain it stays illegal by putting large amounts of money into the pockets of our congressman because if the government decriminalized marijuana, nobody would make money from it anymore, other than the government through its' taxation like tobacco. Ok, all of this was an over simplifying of the situation but the core point is, sometimes the subject of repression is the Repressor. |
