Greetings NancyD ~ This is a very easy question to answer for you. If you are serious about exploring a Political Career, you need to start on the Grass Roots Level. This is very important much like why Detectives have to start out as regular Beat Cops. By doing so, they get to know the City Streets. As Patrol Officers, they become familiar with the people that live in and around their town or city. They soon become familiar with who's who and who'd doing what and who they can squeeze for information and who they can't. Sometimes, when a kid is well connected in the streets and demonstrates a certain level of saavy, they tend to wait until he gets himself into trouble and use that to pressure him into dropping names in exchange for his freedom. Therefore you can look into a few things that would get you on your way. First & Foremost, you need to take classes in political science which you seem to already know. Upon approaching Campaigns, it doesn't take much effort to Intern for a Candidate of your liking. Go to their headquarters and volunteer to help them Campaign. And really apply yourself. Proceed as if, you were their Campaign Manager. Listen & Learn how the process works. Even if you find yourself working for the eventual Loser, you can still gain tons of valuable knowledge. You might also like to get yourself on Town Committees and then eventually when you feel you have a fairly good understanding for what the Town or City needs, put your hat in the District Ring and run for Alderman or get on the City Counsel. Make a name for yourself by paying attention to details in your City. Champion certain causes that your City needs. Don't be afraid to position yourself at functions where the Press happens to be. Establish yourself as a Spokes Person for a particular issue that represents the needs of those who can't or don't fight for themselves. After you've gotten a handle and clear understanding for how it all works, You might like to take a serious look at running for a District Representative that puts you in the Capital of your State. All of these and more are what I refer to as Grass Roots positions. In order to win elections you need to generate money for advertising or you'll find yourself going door to door. Read the papers and introduce yourself at as many functions you can stand going to. You have to work the room, pass out Business Cards advising people anytime they need help with projects, call on you. Soon your name will begin to be mentioned in Circles when people are looking for good people to work with. That's when you're half way there. If someone is running for some office position and they call and ask if you'd like to join them. Of course you'll say yes, unless you happen to be running against them. But really, you gotta smooze a lotta people, smile constantly and build your list of VIPs in your Town, City or State that has grown to be on your Friendly List. Remember this however, in the beginning, you don't want to make enemies. If you're running against someone or working for a person who is running against someone you might interact with at some point. Do it in a fashion where, you don't step on toes. In Politics, you can't afford to burn bridges. You never know when you might need that person down the road. And in Politics, you'll always find a time when you will, even if that person is in the opposite Party you are in, unless of course we're talking about someone who is so evil you want to build a name for yourself tearing them apart. That's enough to think about for now, if you want more advice, I'm sure others have ideas they can throw at you and someday, who knows, you might find yourself in a high level Office. When you do, please remember us little people here. :-) |
