You are correct about the limitations of the President. Ideally, all three branches of our government should work together for the good of the country. Unfortunately, that is rarely the case. Elected officials seem to be way more concerned with maintaining power than doing good for the country. The president does, however, have certain powers, and definitely wields a great amount of influence. One of those powers is the veto. While compromises must be made, a president can guarantee that a bill will be vetoed if certain conditions are not met. Of course, Congress can override the veto, but that can be a difficult thing to do. The president also wields a great amount of power over the military, and foreign policy. All that aside, I think the main function of the presidency is to lead the country in a general direction. Of course the details can be a bitch, but he/she can definitely set the tone. In the upcoming election, I see a chioce between going in a general socialistic direction, or a (slightly) conservative direction. Obama and Clinton are definitely socialists, with Obama being the farthest to the left. McCain, while too liberal for many conservatives, is still the most conservative of the three. In fact, I think he is the closest to the middle. Back to the original post, I couldn't care less if a candidate is black/white, male/female. What I care about is less government spending, lower taxes, a strong defense, and an end to illegal immigration. I think I will be disappointed no matter who wins the election. |
