This week: Let's all yell at Valve for refusing to have any level of quality control on Steam.

I do love the analogy Jim uses here, crude as it is. Steam's a storefront so it's their responsibility to keep shit in working, presentable order. Kind of like how Wal-Mart is just a place that sells things, but has to keep its prices in check, its quality to a certain standard, and it can and will pick and choose who their suppliers are in order to meet those standards.

Valve is, as of current, more or less a bunch of game developers who give off one of two impressions: Either they're incompetent at maintaining a storefront and are perfectly happy to try and sell the game equivalent of used daipers, or they're admitting by continuing their current course of action that they don't give a shit about their customers and are just looking to turn a profit through any means necessary, even if it means literally cashing in on the trust of their supporters to do so.

This week: Discussing the current roadmap for providing updates to FINAL FANTASY XV and how Jim is cautiously optimistic that the devs are doing this because they genuinely want to, as opposed to divine orders from the coats up top.

Titanfall 2 recently got "microtransactions." However, as Jim here describes, they're not the traditional microtransactions that you would normally see in a "fee-to-pay" game. There's no virtual gambling involved. You find a pack of stuff you like? You get the stuff in there right then and there upon payment. So think old character skin DLC packs in the past, from years ago.

This has Jim in a bit of a personal kerfuffle. Titanfall 2 was on the shortlist for a JQ Award before this happened, but much like how others argued in the past that Overwatch's MTs weren't that bad, Jim thinks that Titanfall 2's offerings are pretty unintrusive. So he's thinking about it.

Oh and just incase you needed a reminder, yes, he still fucking hates Overwatch's Loot Boxes.

Well, you ARE literally playing the lottery with each uncrate. There's no guarantee that you'll get anything good out of it, and the devs who use such a system rely on such tomfoolery to rake in extra cash. Heaven knows it works for TF2.

I still feel like Kid Icarus had the best of both worlds. A lot of the factors that decide what you get are still random, but at least you can fuse unwanted crap into stuff you might eventually end up liking or sell them outright for ingame currency, and those have factors with varying degrees of predictability. In Overwatch's case it would be nice if you could, say, give away an item in exchange for a big discount on another in the same category or rarity, or give unlocks based on which characters you're actually playing as opposed to giving you a legendary for a character you're probably never going to intentionally play. You'd still have the randomness keeping people playing even on uncertain outcomes, but you'd have methods to mitigate the worst of it, you know?

I like this idea. Can we make it happen?

The problem is that such a system would be more beneficial to the player than the company selling this stuff in the first place. In Uprising, it makes sense to allow players to fuse unwanted weapons or sell them because it's already accounted for in the game mechanics and on top of that Nintendo only charges a one-time entry fee into the game by way of its purchase price, as its game development model generally lacks microtransactions.

AKA, they weren't trying to make money down that avenue anyway.

The Loot Box system in Overwatch IS there to make money, however. If you can control the outcome of events to a fault and limit how much you have to gamble to get what you want, that means you'll stop spending money sooner on average. It won't mean you'll stop spending money altogether, it just means you won't drop as much as Blizzard is hoping you will.

The lootbox system is there to exploit the player, and denying them what they want through sheer luck means that more often than not the devs will make money hand over fist and basically get far more than the game's actual cost over the course of any given individual playing the game than if they chose to make these skins and other assorted things readily available and purchasable as-is. Yes, some people will get their payoff immediately, but the overall number of people who get that lucky are incredibly low.

They have no incentive to cease exploiting you or trying to come up with a way to let you potentially recuperate your losses to some degree, so we can't expect them to actually introduce anything that would help you to stop spending money on their digital casino.

Titanfall 2's devs clearly have a much more clear-cut system in mind that allows people to just buy what they want and still rakes in a certain amount of cash per person without outright exploiting them, which is probably why it's still in the GotY consideration as opposed to being booted out of it entirely like Overwatch is.

Victors

Also, Jim reviewed SUPER MARIO RUN. He hates himself for it.

I noticed the "big open world =/= actual content" conundrum around Just Cause 2 or so (and hell, the original was even worse at it, though at the time I just chalked that up to being a crap videogame in general), so I'm kinda surprised it's taken anyone until No Man's Sky to realize it's basically a living, breathing fallacy. Making the world bigger only stretches the actual activity within it thinner regardless of the amount of effort put into populating it - it's better to make a modestly sized world with all the interesting shit packed together than to spread it out and probably not ever find everything in it.

It's probably a complete fluke led by hardware limitations, but I swear the biggest games of the N64 era just handled that content to size ratio fucking perfectly. Why can't people just do that with a higher poly count?

I remember playing sandbox games like GTA and True Crime back in the day and thinking that I'd really like to be able to go inside some of these buildings, interact with the environment more and have more to do than drive around a mostly empty city while avoiding/hitting pedestrians. This has clearly been an issue as far as back then, the PS2 days, and it's a little mindboggling how we haven't progressed much further than that. Some games do better than others based on the setting and how they decide to populate their world (Assassin's Creed and more recent entries in the GTA series have improved on the formula), but there'll always be that "filler" in between that just makes you think they could've done more with it.

Legal case with Digital Homicide is seemingly all but concluded in Jim's favour. If I'm reading the mumbo jumbo properly, expect a Jimquisition regarding this whole fiasco sometime after Feb 10, as that appears to be deadline for Romine to provide whatever to prolong the case.

As if there was ever any doubt.

The real surprise is that Jim has his own Reddit and I didn't know about it until now.
