Wait, let me get this straight. People thought that there was a "conflict of interest" because reviewers are paying developers mid-development? Wouldn't a legitimate conflict of interest be the other way around? I'm not sure whether I'm following the train of logic right or if there just isn't one.

It's a conflict of interest in the sense that a reviewer is funding a project so they are invested in it. At the end of the day, because of that investment, they will obviously try to sell it and, more likely than not, will give it high praise and accolade to legitimise their purchase. While in most cases, a sensible person would put money into something if they legitimately believe the project is worth their time, there will obviously be cases where the end product is garbage and the person funding it was so invested or so attached that they'd feel the need to continue supporting it, even after it's clear that it wasn't worth the money spent on it (see the Inafune fanboys and how they're STILL frothing at the mouth regarding both, Mighty No. 9 and Red Ash).

Like, basically, you can't trust this person's opinion or review of this product because they're too "close" to it and will most likely have some kind of bias. While I think that's kind of BS, I can see where that opinion could come from and can totally see that actually happening in certain cases.

While they're technically allowed to if they're not under NDA, and while blacklisting outlets over it is petty and juvenile, I still think it has to be said: fuck journalists who post leaks just for pageviews. There's a certain magic to being exposed to something in an environment the publishers and developers have hand-crafted to generate surprise and excitement, just as much as there is a certain disappointment to being spoiled to it ahead of time by plain text and maybe a blurry picture if we're lucky. This is pretty plain to see in both spectrums if you've been following Smash and seen the wildly different reactions between Ryu and Cloud.

That's not to say there aren't special circumstances for most of the usual suspects - exclusivity deals in journalism are absolutely shitty no matter which way you spin it, for example, so that Borderlands 2 reveal Jim brought up had every right to backfire. But I'm so fucking tired of being so lukewarm about everything the gaming media hypes us up for because journalists take advantage of publishers that don't cover their tracks, every bit as much as I'm sick of publishers who expect journalists to be their own secondary fucking PR department. Just let publishers make a reveal and let journalists report on it. For fuck's sake.

Like, I see both sides of it and I'm more inclined to side with journalists who have a right to report news and information as they get it, I can understand how leaks can be bad for business. Like most things though, people are free to dismiss those reports or just outright not give them the time of day.

Wow, no one's posted this yet? Usually Failman has this one covered. Anyway, Jim talks about how some companies are being utter degenerates about multiplayer only games, and comments on Konami again.

You know, I still find it kind of staggering that dedicated multiplayer games should have that level of support and yet Battlefront has less content than even the throwaway multiplayer modes that plauged most of the mid-late 2000's because they seemed to be obligatory for every game for some reason. Almost as much as the fact that people are still actually buying it in spite of that.

Also pretty funny how Evolve turned out. It's crazy to think I once considered it the second coming of Left 4 Dead before the crazy amounts of DLC milking ruined it - especially considering L4D was able to give it out for free with they money they'd saved not making singleplayer-specific campaigns.

Jim addresses one of the many issues I've had with modern entries in the Final Fantasy series, including the upcoming remake of 7.

History repeats itself yet fucking again. Square Enix, seemingly learning nothing from Bravely Default, arbitrarily decided that, prior to the release of the Xbox One and PlayStation 4, consoles weren't going to last the current generation and that mobile and PC games were the way of the future. Hence all the remasters. And then they were blindsided by the success of Fallout 4 and The Witcher III: Wild Hunt.

The kicker? The execs were blatantly ignoring their own employees who were trying to advise them otherwise.

So you know, the usual. Hitman and FFVIII Remake are now too far down the episodic pipe to be fixed and this whole kerfuffle was pretty much the entire reason for Mankind Divided's"Augment Your Pre-order" thing.

Oh and then there's all the other stuff.
