This just in: Developing and publishing for multiple platforms cost a lot. If produced on solely their own budget, we'd likely only see a Steam release and A: Get a stagnant product that hasn't improved from the problems of the genera; or B: dev time would take much longer for a quality product without a bigger and stronger team. Also Mike Z is exaggerating just now inaccessible this information is and how grave an offense it is. The FAQ section on kickstarter campaigns is easy to see and access for everyone. The fact of the matter is that most kickstarters, including outside of videogames, have their own budget for their product to some degree. The point of kickstarter is to get more money to make the the product sooner, faster, in higher quantity, or of higher quality. You cannot have a successful kickstarter without some investment on your company's part to begin with. Also, they did actually mention it in their kickstarter video that "the kickstarter is important to expand our initial vision." I could probably eventually make a game on my own when I finally find it in me to commit to one, but if I did it on my own it'd probably look like the retarded bastard child of Sonic Advance and Peppa Pig. Having money to throw around, though, not only uniformly increases the quality of the assets the project puts out, it also allows for a bigger team to spread the workload out, getting important shit done quicker so they have more time to do proper QA. At least they're being honest and transparent about where the money actually goes.

He looks awesome. :3 As an aside, the game hit it's 1 500 000 pound stretch goal for thevorchedtral soundtrack. New goal is for 2 000 000 and will give the first post release DLC for free to all backers. |

WiiU version's cancelled. Before you flip your shit - they've left open the option for backers to change their platform, and are working to make a Switch version in its place. |

Plenty of Kickstarters that promised a Wii U version seem to be pulling out in wake of this statement, it seems. All of them cite technical limitations and not the fact that Nintendo has pretty much left the console dead in the water. |
