Don't Buy From That Company has a new member, EA. I was really holding onto EA because of Mass Effect 3 after all the crap they did with Dragon Age II (remember the blue people form Avatar?) and Battlefield 3 (remember the brown and dank realistic atmosphere?). But now they're just pushing it! I can "finish" Mass Effect 3 on Wikipedia if I want. XD Besides, I have achieved my level of satisfaction; I now know the Illusive Man's real name, so I couldn't care less about some alien robot dudes invading Earth sideways! P.S. SSX has an online pass that is only useful for gathering in-game money. If you don't use the code, YOU CAN STILL PLAY ONLINE WHILE BEING ON A FROZEN MOUNTAINTOP! I forgot where I read that. Damned memory. I'll dig it up. "Hey Arem......I'm ruining this topic for ya with my awesomeness! Take that squeegee and shove it where the moon still shines, he he he he he! OHAI LUFFY!" Oh, we've got a nice haul of bullshit today guys. Kingdoms of Amalur will have an online pass You might be thinking, big whoop, who cares? Well, Kingdoms of Amalur is an exclusively single player game, it has absolutely no online component whatsoever. You know what that means? The online pass will be used to block off single player content. Yeah, that's right. On that note, remember how EA and Activision enjoy mouthing off about rival companies by name? "Skyrim and Oblivion are the same game and we want to take RPGs in a new direction That is some classic EA right there. Syndicate will not have an online pass Sounds like good news right? Well yeah, it kinda is I suppose, aside from the fact that they butchered one of the most groundbreaking RTSes and turned it into an FPS. There is however one interesting quote from the article:
Wow EA, just outright coming out and SAYING it, admiting that you intentionally lock people out of core parts of the game. That takes some serious cojones. Origins signs up 11 more publishers It just keeps getting bigger and people continue to feed the machine. Oh hey Arem, you're gonna love this next bit: EA wins big off of FIFA hackers Yeah, that's right, they're actually making money off of that shit. Boohoo, used sales and piracy are killing us, we need to fuck up the industry so we can make up the losses, yet here they are, making a profit off of the malicious activities of hackers. Might be time to cancel that Mass Effect 3 preorder...seriously, don't give these bastards your money. D: |

Wait a minute. Is that last article stating that EA actually went into my account and stole my points? EDIT: Upon further investigation, Xbox.com doesn't even have that premium content for sale on Xbox LIVE, meaning EA shouldn't have been able to get those earnings for DLC that doesn't exist. I'm more perplexed than angry, honestly. EDIT2: You know something about Kingdoms of Alamur? They gripe at how Oblivion and Skyrim are mainly the same--a claim I'm not too quick to dismiss for prejudicial reasons myself--but KoA borrows a LOT of elements from Oblivion. I played the demo to see what the fuss was about, and I found myself playing a slightly more cartoony version of Oblivion. :| Edited by Arem, Feb 4 2012, 07:45 PM.

KoA isn't really much like Oblivion, the combat system is totally different and that's the most important part of the game >_> Fable is a closer comparison but even then Amalur's got more buttons to press. Oblivion and Skyrim you're lucky to have more than two actions in combat ever. Call me crazy but I sort of don't mind online pass content. No hear me out, piracy is an overblown problem but buying used games is something I can totally understand people getting upset about. Yes, it's cheaper and more convenient for you as a customer, but not one cent of the money you pay for a used game actually goes to the people who made it. The piracy argument "I wouldn't have bought it anyway" doesn't really apply because if you're buying a used game it is clearly something you are prepared to pay cash money for. And they aren't even excluding you from the whole game, they are adding something you can buy to make up for the fact that you are playing their game, you bought the game with money and none of that money went to the people who made the game. Tycho and Gabe answered both the above questions better than I could already, though. http://penny-arcade.com/2012/01/27 http://penny-arcade.com/2012/01/30 Edited by Jacquerel, Feb 4 2012, 09:32 PM.

Uh no, because the first person who bought it new already payed the company for the product. The sale was made with the original purchase and saying buying it used is equivalent to piracy is like saying I shouldn't be allowed to let my friend borrow my games, finish them, then give them back to me because he doesn't want to play them anymore. Same concept, nothing like piracy. A pirate will take this game for free without paying for it at all, there was no sale to be made whatsoever. On that note, you're also saying that if I bought a brand new game from someone off of eBay or Amazon, then that purchase is also equivalent to piracy as none of the money I spent is going to the company, despite the fact that the seller may have made a big profit off of it. Fact of the matter is, buying used can be way more convenient for several reasons. If I had very little money to spend on luxuries and wanted to treat myself to a game, I'd obviously try to find a good deal on it and used is pretty lucrative and legal option. Should I, instead, do the morally reprehensible thing and pirated, saving myself the money? You're also forgetting the fact that the lack of availability of games after time is another reason why used is a good option, because you'll either never find it new, or see people exploit that fact by jacking up prices. Not everyone who's buying used is being a tightwad, there are legitimate reasons to do so aside from the fact that it's just cheaper. |

The way I see it, if you buy a game from the company, then it's already yours. Since it belongs to you now, you can do whatever you want with it; read its manual before bedtime, use it for toilet paper, sell it, all of the above! The companies have no right to prevent you from selling your game. And the excuse they keep using about how used games affect their sales: 1. Make good games and stop being dicks and you'll get your sales. 2. There are people, who still like to be treated like sheep by companies and buy their crap, who enjoy buying anything the companies dish out; there's the sales figure you wanted! So the online pass is just a way of making mo' money mo' money mo' money. |

That's...completely the opposite of what I said. D:< I said buying used doesn't necessarily mean I'm doing it because it's cheaper, but maybe because it's the only option I have aside from pirating. |

" If I had very little money to spend on luxuries and wanted to treat myself to a game, I'd obviously try to find a good deal on it and used is pretty lucrative and legal option." Guess I misinterpreted this line :U I never said wanting to buy a game for cheaper was a bad thing, nothing wrong with finding a good deal, but I'd still rather actually pay the people who I am getting enjoyment from rather than some other third party. But hey I'm also one of those crazy people who thinks that stealing music, films and video games is wrong in all circumstances even if you can't or never intended to pay for it so there's that. I'm a student so I'm not swimming in money, but if I can't afford a game what I generally don't do is go and download it off the internet. I do this thing called "saving" until I can afford it. That's essentially what I was getting at, but I was outlining circumstances where it's difficult to directly pay the company for the product, but you're not stealing anything since the payment for said product was already made. It's like Fenix said, once that game is bought, it's yours (though today's industry seems to think otherwise) and since you're still paying for the game and buying it off a previous owner, it shouldn't really be equated to being the same thing as piracy. |
