Wow. There are just no words for the sheer level of blame-shifting STUPID going on in EA. ...Honestly, I'd be kind of surprised if Dilbert didn't mock them at one point or another.

And then this happened over at SSMB.

I.... I didn't know where else to post this... it's not Sim City related... but it is EA related, well had I been more in a Black Phantom mode it would have been SimCity 5 related.

If you've just seem my status update, you know where this is going.

I was in Hull city centre today and there was an EA games booth there, they were letting people play on Need for Speed, Dead Space 3, Crysis 3 and Medal of Honor for free, then if you left 'feedback' you could even get a free keyring WOO!

Curious, I went inside. I went on Dead Space 3 for a while and played the intro (up until you fall down the mountain), wasn't that impressed with it, so decided to leave.

As I'm headding out, a dude dressed in EA clothing from head to toe comes over and says 'Do you use twitter?' I said 'Yeah?' He then says, 'Well you can use one of these computers to post on twitter what you thought, we'll give you a free keyring if you do.'

Now... look at what he said...

"Do you use twitter" and "Use one of these computers to post on twitter"

He did NOT say "Log in on twitter and post what you thought" he said "use one of those computers to post on twitter"

I go to the units and discover the webpage is already loaded up on twitter, and I see a bunch of tweets about the hub. So I thought it was some kind of public thing they'd set up... so I started to type and then noticed a 'You have new tweets' and it was quite a large number. I then click show tweets and was puzzled at how not related to the hub/games it were, they were on about SimCity 5 and other EA games not at this hub... then I noticed... It wasn't a public account... It was an official EA account!

The guy had obviously been using it before and had left himself logged in! And now here I was, with permission to use the computers... Oh my goodness.

I had full access to the account. It was like someone had parked a car in front of you and handed you the keys before then saying 'use it.' It was crazy, I could have done tons of damage if I wanted. My mind was racing with stuff like 'Post SimCity 5 stinks' 'Servers? We have plenty of those, they're serving meatballs in the canteen' or 'So how bout those DRM's I eat them with M&M's.'

If I were really really naughty, I could have done some serious damage for them today... but I decided to be nice.

I logged out of the account and just as I was logging in I thought 'Wait a moment... I'm just about to log into someone elses computer with my own details... and theres no 'this is a public computer' option... Fuck this!' Told the guy my concerns and was basically told 'oh.. sorry mate'

I didn't get my free keyring... =(

If you were in my position today... would you have been evil?

Also here, have the story so far in .jpg form.

I would have been very concerned about posting on a computer like that. Who knows what has been done to it since it was EA's?

But shit, talk about willpower. I've had access to that kind of power before, although not nearly as big as EA, and I know the temptation all too well.

I like it when people use the word "gay" in any context other than a homosexual one - it only proves that they have the maturity of a five year old, as if their obsession with shooters didn't already do a good job of pointing that out. It's also pretty amusing that he pointed out Skyrim considering the fact that, y'know, it's set in the bloody medival era and doesn't even have muskets, let alone generic modern firearms.

But just for fun, let's play around with his logic a bit.

game - gun = gay
game + gun = -gay
game + gun + Arem = ???

The gist of it, at least from what I can assume, is that most of them reviewed pre-launch, while the servers weren't so horribly, unplayably clogged.

Lots of groups played and reviewed the games under EA's stipulations, which would be 5 days before the launch on their campus. Often times when this happens game scores bolster higher. Other places didn't go the full route, but still reviewed the game before the rest of the mob got to playing, so the way the game actually handles never got to be reviewed. Finally, Metacritic will not update a score when the publication does it, so cases where polygon's 9.5/10 dropped to a 4/10 is not reflected.

If anyone doesn't think that it's a cynical move demanded from high up, and that maxis taking the blame isn't anything but saving the much more valuable EA from negative press, then you must be blind.

Oh I'd believe that considering Maxis would have had absolutely nothing to gain from forcing the game to be DRM only by design. In fact, they would have not only alienated their original fanbase, but turned off anyone else who just wanted to build big cities alone and without the hassle of some forced internet connection bullshit.

It'll never happen; Maxis owns everything "Sim" related, including The Sims, which is probably the originator of the DLC model. The Sims is big money and, unless EA manages to weasel it out of Maxis' hands, they're not getting rid of them.

EA claims an offline mode is completely impossible due to the way the server handles the game's activities. They lied.

Quote:

“The servers are not handling any of the computation done to simulate the city you are playing. They are still acting as servers, doing some amount of computation to route messages of various types between both players and cities. As well, they’re doing cloud storage of save games, interfacing with Origin, and all of that. But for the game itself? No, they’re not doing anything. I have no idea why they’re claiming otherwise. It’s possible that Bradshaw misunderstood or was misinformed, but otherwise I’m clueless.”
What's more perplexing is that EA, in spite of the lack of dependence on their servers, still found a way to make it a laggy, sometimes unplayable mess in spite of that.
