Somehow I'm not surprised. EA needs a way to make back the absolutely stupid amount of money they dropped on this game... how many sales did they need to break even, again? Five million, wasn't it? When has a game ever sold that much?

Going back to the THQ auction on the previous page, there's rumours that either EA or Take Two bought the WWE liscense. Strangely enough, they didn't get anything else. I can't find a solid source at the moment though, so keep your salt shakers close by.

EDIT: Found one. Take Two has the WWE liscense now. So EA got... nothing at all. Very strange.

I'm glad they got nothing, but Vigil/Darksiders still hasn't been touched by anybody so...yeah. D:

I was going to mirror what others have said about the WWE license hopefully becoming not shit by the next game, but that'd only be possible if there'll be a new development studio for the next one, rather than Yuke's, or whatever the current studio's name is. Then again, I haven't actually played a WWE game since SmackDown! vs. RAW 2009, so for all I know, WWE '13 may actually be good.

If anything, there's hope for the online pass going bye bye.

It's a shame that Darksiders didn't get picked up, but from what the links Seeco posted in the Discussion topic said, Darksiders/Vigil was one of the things that wasn't actually included in the auction. Shame, really, since PlatinumGames was interested in acquiring the series. And, coninuing my complaining, the Wii U version of DSII will never get patched.

Somehow I figured that would happen when I played the Dead Space 3 demo. It just looked like it was going to have it.

I like it when people use the word "gay" in any context other than a homosexual one - it only proves that they have the maturity of a five year old, as if their obsession with shooters didn't already do a good job of pointing that out. It's also pretty amusing that he pointed out Skyrim considering the fact that, y'know, it's set in the bloody medival era and doesn't even have muskets, let alone generic modern firearms.

But just for fun, let's play around with his logic a bit.

game - gun = gay
game + gun = -gay
game + gun + Arem = ???

So EA talks about their future with the PS4, and oh my god some of this stuff is freakin' gold.

Quote:

“We are excited about Sony’s news”
“At EA, we have never been as prepared or more ready for the start of a new console cycle.”
“Not being at PS Meeting was not indicative at all. We’re maintaining a balance between other parties.”
“Between now and E3 you will see a lot from us… I’ve seen the new Battlefield and it is stunning. It is just amazing what the imagination of the game developers are allowed to do with that much power.”
“[PS4 and next Xbox are] between 8 and 10 times the power [of previous gen]“
“We no longer have to constrain our games. 1080p, 60FPS… [there will be a] level of gameplay that is unprecedented.”
“What used to take months in the past will now take days to do” [due to consoles being more like PCs].
“[There are] new IPs that we are building for this [upcoming] console generation.”
“100mil [has been spent on next gen] R&D. [EA will] moderate costs through cutbacks [(worrying)]“
“[EA is] assuming MS and Sony are more aligned in release dates.” [Basically saying the 720 will be out this holiday].
“Games have been in development for the past year” [for next gen]
”5-10% increase in cost [of next gen development]… “but cost will increase in the future as the games get bigger.”
They expect to make more money on the bigger next gen titles than ever before.
“We had too many titles… now less but bigger.” Around 15 core titles.
On next gen game costs – “We haven’t set price, but you will probably see a similar trend [where prices go up $10, but then fall back down]“
On game user data – “We generate around 50 terabytes of game data every single day.” “We are applying techniques like machine learning, so that we can integrate [monetization and gameplay changes more effectively]“
There will be: “lower marketing expenses as we can connect directly to our core players [through existing games]“
“We all want more cash flow.”
Looking at “another publisher with two huge franchises [Activision]” and “continuing to support their own franchises, while investing in new IP”. Wouldn’t speculate on whether they think they’ll be able to have two franchises that bring in more than 50% of annual revenue.
On social – companies EA bought weren’t as successful as they hoped, but were not a failure. “PvZ and Bejeweled will continue to come to all platforms.”
While talking about social – “[But] we’ve seen the benefits of creating games like Battlefield and FIFA“
BF3 DLC brought in $150 million. Buzz behind DLC also led to new people buying the game.
On microtransactions: “We’re building into all our games the ability to pay for more, to unlock faster… trucks, levels, etc. microtransactions. Consumers love that.”

Let's just look at that last bullet point, for emphasis.

It's a miracle that there are still people stupid enough to keep them in business. If this was ten to twenty years ago, they'd have already run themselves into the ground and have gone down in history for it.

And even while talking about their future with the PS4, they've already signed exclusivity deals with Microsoft.

Guess all that DRM bullshit must have caught their eye, because I've never known them to turn down cross-platform profits often otherwise.

EA cancels a completely finished port of Crysis 3 on WiiU due to "lack of business support" from Nintendo. Which I'm guessing translates more closely to "they wouldn't let us replace their entire online infrastructure with Origin". There's petty, there's amazingly petty, and then there's incredibly stupid bullshit like this. Not that any of you guys were looking forward to it anyway, right?

Quote:

We did have Crysis 3 running on the Wii U. We were very close to launching it. But there was a lack of business support between Nintendo and EA on that. Since we as a company couldn’t launch on the Wii U ourselves — we don’t have a publishing license — Crysis 3 on Wii U had to die.
Oh yeah and some massive wankery about a generic FTP shooter that they honestly expect to be able to compete with TF2.

Okay... So EA seriously thought that as a third party publisher, albeit a bloated large one, they should be allowed to replace the entire Nintendo Network with Origin. Aside from all the horror stories I hear about EA's Steam knockoff, there's also the fact that this would give them a dangerous level of control over the online userbase, and it's pretty obvious that these guys are greasy weasels who wouldn't want to stop there.

Call me paranoid, but I seriously think that EA wanted to absorb Nintendo's assets, but couldn't do it directly. Thus the ham-fisted attempt to drive a wedge into the stone, so to speak.

Nothing of value was lost; even if Farcry 3 Crysis 3 was the greatest game in the universe, it never would have been worth ANY demands EA would have had of Nintendo just to have it released on the Wii U.

The sales of Dead Space 3 reach an ever-so-predictable conclusion. There's talk that not only has EA already cancelled a sequel in progress, they've axed the entire IP, laid off several staff in Visceral Montreal and may even have closed the entire studio in reaction. In case you've already forgotten why, this was the game they dropped so much money on that they honestly expected to garner five million copies sold just to break even. If it's any point of comparison, Dead Space 3 has somehow sold even less than Aliens: Colonial Marines, despite the latter being so much more infamous.

EA driving their own developers into the ground over incredibly short-sighted bullshit isn't exactly new, but every time it never ceases to amaze me that they can systematically murder the careers of so many and still somehow not catch shit for it.
