Just a small distance experiment for starters, but they hope to be able to increase the distance significantly for the next test. A perfected version could possibly exceed services like Google Fiber in terms of data transmission. And a comment from someone on the Facebook widget below the article:

Somehow I can't help but feel that copper is a small price to pay compared to being at the absolute mercy of a borderline ISP monopoly. I'm kind of curious what the actual ping would be over long distances - because even the source admits it won't be instantaneous, but it sounds like they're coming close. |
