The latest game from the Ace Combat has recently come out for the PlayStation 3. The game is free (to download and play) and focuses on online multiplayer co-op. Anyone around here interested in the game? I think a few of the old Ace Combat fans are still around. |

Namco's on a pretty big free to play binge lately, hasn't it? First Tekken, then Soul Calibur, now this is finally out. How does it play? Is it more similar to classic Ace Combat games, or that god awful "Call of Duty in the Sky" one that came out a few years back? |

It plays like the classics, I suppose. Assuming you're talking about the 'close combat' or whatever from Assault Horizons? That's gone and it's back to being, well, like every other Ace Combat game I've ever played. The free-to-play seems nice so far, in that there's no cosmetic or pay-to-win cashshop. Instead the limitation is 'fuel'. For each mission/sortie you spend a tank of fuel. You get three tanks for free, which refill at a rate for 4 hours per tank. Kind of like a 'facebook' game that way, and that you can also purchase 'stock' (non-refilling) fuel. However you can also get stock fuel from completing 'Challenges' (quests, basically, for lack of a better term) as well as from the reward boxes at the end of each sortie. Currently you're also given a batch of stock (10, I think?) when you start out. The other thing to consider is that progressing in the Single-Player Story Campaign costs fuel, and after level 2 unlocking the levels costs credits (in-game money). Both of those can be negated by buying the $20 Campaign pack from the store. If you're an Ace Combat fan, I'd say that's totally worth it ($20 for the 'unlimited' Single Player). Also there's a challenge that rewards you with 20 stock of fuel at the end of mission 5 (which is currently as far as you can go in SP). I've yet to get close to running out of stock fuel, so the mechanic seems to be really well balanced at the moment. |

Sounds good, I'll let Fenix know about this as he's been in a massive funk since Namco "ruined" Ace Combat with Assault Horizons. I told him about this game when it was first announced, but he refused to be optimistic considering he didn't think they could make the game work with the free-to-play model. |
