After all the bullshit the first season goes to hook up the two main leads, the second I found out that, later on down the series, they break up, I Shift Deleted the shit out of everything I had on it. I actually liked the first season because the main dude (I think his name was Leonard?) wasn't as pathetic or ridiculous as the rest of his friends and, for all intents and purposes, acted normal. The girl he was into was a pretty decent human being, especially with all the shit she had to put up with from his friends and, it was nice that, at the end of the day, they could find enough common ground to like each other and form a romantic relationship by overlooking their flaws and just connecting on a whole other level. Then the show went and shat on that, and everything I believe it stood for went down the toilet with it. The Big Bang Theory was supposed to be a show that exposed the mainstream to geek/nerd culture. Yes, it was done in a mostly exaggerated way, but at the same time, through the main lead's eyes, it showed everyone that the sensible majority of us were just your average Joes, with different hobbies. They ALMOST got it right, but they just couldn't hold back on the incessant bullshit that the media loves to throw at everyone about hurrdurr nerds are silly. Honestly though, it isn't the media's fault, as all fiction is based on some kind of truth. There are probably people out there who ARE like that, who are pathetic weasels who only do nice things to get attention, whether it's from the fairer sex or just people in general. This doesn't just apply to one subgroup, there are all kinds of scum out there who'd butter you up to take advantage of you. We call them opportunists, and they don't just fit under one group of people. |

To be fair, I did state that last part already and the media does technically shoot first in this case since while there were pathetic weasels to begin with, they weren't sensationalized to the point where they're the face of the nerd culture. ...In fact, why the fuck is the term 'nerd culture' even a thing to begin with? I digress though, the media exaggerated the problem and then society ate it up, and suddenly that's what all nerds are because that's what they're led to expect. Anywho, I can agree that the first season was watchable, but I honestly started falling out of interest with it because of how things were portrayed in that series. Not only did Seeco mention a couple of the problems, I also have to point out that the characterization of the four main 'geeks' was kind of... meh. Leonard was the most stable average joe type of person for the most and I actually didn't mind the whole dating angle when it finally got going because it looked like it might go somewhere. Then they started screwing with the dynamics by making Penny unable to actually commit even though it seemed like the two went well together, and Leonard became more of that endlessly pining individual who kept going even when it became clear that he really would have been better off without her. Sheldon just hit way too close to home in terms of his self-absorbed mannerisms and how he has an ego that rivals Yu-Gi-Oh Abridged Seto Kaiba's with it being every bit as hard to deflate. The way he holds himself as more important than anyone else just drives me up the wall since I get enough of that attitude at home, and the fact that he rarely suffers consequences for his actions annoys me even more. Plus there's the fact that when he does get hit with a lesson, it barely ever sticks. Granted, he sort of improves as time goes on but he never moves out of that state of mind completely and generally acts like an overgrown kid. (In fact, in more than one episode they hang a pretty big lampshade over it but never move to fully resolve it.) Though that's still not as bad as it could be. Next is Howard, who is pretty much the thirty year old basement dweller/virgin who spends most of the series being a greasy weasel toward most people (especially women) and often acts as creepy as the premise would imply. Granted, he does improve as the series goes on but at the same time it never lets him fully shake off the stimga he had let himself build up, and even when he does accomplish something (like getting to go up to the space station to install some rather underappreciated zero-g toilets) he gets treated like crap (via the two astronauts who were acting more like schoolyard bullies and were pretty unprofessional all the time in dealing with him) or his accomplishment is ignored to the point where he feels that everyone would forget. (Justified because people either treat his trip into space like it's not an accomplishment at all or in the case of Sheldon he flat-out forgets that Howard did get to be an astronaut. His earlier greasy weaselness gets traded out for everyone treating him like a joke because of what he was, which I can't decide if it's the writers going 'hey it's okay to treat people like this even after they change for the better because lolnerd' or them making a sly comment about how the stigma just sticks to you like glue until the day you die. And then Raj, who has to be the one character who degrades the most over time. Starts off well enough, he's pretty average even though he does kinda hit the odd behavior that doesn't put him so far off from Howard but for the most part he's not that bad. Then Howard moved out of his role in the show and the writers apparently decided that they needed someone else to fill the role. Hello, token minority! He goes from being stable to being increasingly unhinged, lusting after women that are already taken, using a toy breed dog as some kind of companion substitute since all his friends are either married or have girlfriends, and the one time it looks like he might get a break and the rug gets pulled out from under him. I'd go on, but I don't really feel like it right now. tl;dr BBT went from being a decent sitcom to being a good look into how society views nerds/gamers for the most part. |

I liked it. I had never seen or heard of it because I was away at college since it started and I rarely watch TV anymore. My friend got the first four seasons on a Black Friday sale at Best Buy and the summer I was down, he sat me down and we went through the entire series in about a week. I liked it. I think it overblows the nerdiness/geek culture because lol, normal people won't find it funny otherwise, and the nerds will totally like the tips of the hat we throw them, right? Right?! But it was okay, far as sitcoms go. I really like Bernadette and Amy better than the other characters, and really don't like how overblown some of the science junk is. Also yes, I'm a geologist one of those dirt people. I studied engineering physics under a physicist who was a project leader at Los Alamos National Laboratories in the 80s and 90s who has a PhD. I could level with him and he was proud "the geology major" outscored half the engineers in the class because I was working my butt off to graduate. But it was a fun show before it become too much of a relationship drama soap opera by the third season. I haven't seen the last season or two because I've been working fairly long and inconsistent hours. |

Welcome to every sitcom EVER, and it's an incredibly RARE case when, even after it's reached this point, a sitcom still manages to be good (like Fresh Prince, or maybe Boy Meets World). |
