Welp, now it begins. I love how one of the comments basically runs through what people are going to blame, which is going to be literally everything but guns. And there'll be crackpot theories before people turn to the gun issue. |

And any gun issue could end up resulting in another shooting, because that's just how religious some Americans are about their "gun rights". |

Nerd culture encourages misogyny. Pretty much lays it all out. |

Wait, what? I'm a nerd, but I was raised feminist by both parents. Princess Leia was the hero of the first two Star Wars, Luke was just a tag-along. o.0 |

I, for one, welcome our tiny, fuzzy overlords. The one thing I disagree with in the article, which I commented on the Facebook post my friend left linking to this, is that what it says about geeks/nerds constantly seeking women out of their league/popular girls is complete BS. If anything, we spend way too much time trying to find a girl with common interests so we can actually hold an intelligent conversation with them about the implications of Sanic and Mario. |

I've never not dated a nerd. That said, women can be just as petty, childish, and abusive as most men. I've had a hard life. |

Oh I know, but in context, what happened here was a result of something that's been festering for much longer, thanks to the media. |

What Seeco said about the ideal 'nerd target' is. My first real love is as big a nerd as I am (even if it didn't work out), plus I don't feel like a woman is a trophy to be earned. Then again, as my time in college Psychology classes show I'm kind of an immense outlier in several areas, so who knows. Maybe we're the rare sane breed of "nerd". Maybe people just prefer to target and make fun of the freaks and then force that on everyone else who could even come close to that classification just because it's more fun than treating them like sane people. |

I'm starting to feel like it's the latter; honestly every nerd/geek I've ever come across in my life (which is practically everyone I form any kind of relationship/bond with) has been on par with what we're preaching here. I've yet to meet someone who'd even remotely fit within our social circles with the mentality of "deserving" women as a trophy for being a good soldier. |

I thought about it, and yeah. Not only is this pretty much completely correct, the guy in the article screws big-time by assuming that all nerds fall into the 'freak' category that society and media has sensationalized over the years. The biggest problem any group has in being taken seriously at this point is that there's a lot of sheep out there that will eat up anything thrown to them whether it's what's best for them or not, and media tends to make money not off accuracy, but from being entertaining. So you take a group of people who are different from the norm and you purposely ignore all the sane, normal people who are fully capable of functioning in society and seek out the bottom of the barrel weirdos because that's what sells. Then people like the person this thread was made to point out are sensationalized and brought to the forefront, which then becomes the 'face' of our culture whether we want it to be or not. Then this becomes 'normal'. This isn't the truth about us, this is just what everyone too lazy or apathetic to understand us chooses to believe, and what others profit off of because our boring truth won't sell. Part of what's wrong with the article that was linked earlier is that the writer, whether they know it or not, has bought into the image that society and media's forced on them, and they truly believe that 'nerds' are the problem when in all actuality it's everyone else exaggerating the negative aspects for shits and giggles that's the problem. We're not losers, we're not freaks, we're not murderers, rapists, or anything else. We're normal people who are into certain hobbies that are no better or worse than anyone else who functions well in society, and I imagine most of us would be perfectly content to be able to be honest about what we are and be left alone. The problem is that our society is too immature to leave us alone. Too lazy and apathetic to understand us. Though this isn't something that applies just to us. Nearly every 'group' that could be made into a caricature has been, every group that could be sensationalized has been, every group that could be exploited has been, and the damage this has done has stuck so hard that it might as well be permanent. 'Nerd' culture just happens to be in the spotlight right now, right alongside gamers or anything that could be even remotely connected to them. And don't even get me started on Big Bang Theory. |

>Big Bang Theory >Bolts for nearest depressurisation chamber Honestly, if the season 1 set I have wasn't a birthday present that I got from a friend years ago, I'd probably sell or toss it. Then again, I never would have bought it myself because laziness. etc. etc. I'll shut up before I inadvertantly do get you started D: |
