Fans of Solatorobo and Tail Concerto will probably be interested in this, otherwise, yeah, it's a cellphone game. Looks interesting though, it combines Final Fantasy's job system with like this massive party of characters where you fight a bunch of enemies, then bosses. Wonder if we'll end up getting this one.

Hey, don't get ahead of yourself there - JRPGs are one of very few genres that can actually work on a smartphone virtually unhindered. I for one actually approve this direction for once, as long as it's not laden with microtransactions.

Funny that, I'd actually just started playing Solatorobo about a fortnight ago too.

I actually need to get around to finishing my third playthrough and get those last robot parts that'll make me completely indestructible.

But yeah, it looks to me like this game's actual character system might be some kind of social utility. Like, you collect characters through other people, or at least, it just seems that way to me (Luffy/Keiji's familiarity with the language is free to prove me wrong if they can make sense of the trailer). IF that was the case though, that would've been an interesting feature to use through the 3DS's StreetPass.

I do recall the developers saying they were working on a proper sequel to Solatorobo, so I'm not sure if this is it or not. Either way, I'd love to see more of how this works to get a better understanding of it.

EDIT: As an aside, I can think of at least one JRPG which epically flopped because they screwed it up.

Let's be fair, I think we can both agree that the platform wasn't at fault there so much as Square as a developer - if not the fact that it was a game with literally zero depth, the fact that they nickel and dimed the player incessantly on top of that.

The team-swapping mechanics here, on the other hand, look a combination of simple and versatile that has been more or less a lost art since, oh I dunno... the N64 days? Interestingly enough I had pretty much the same thing to say of Solatorobo from what relatively little I've played of it so far, so I think it's fairly safe to say Namco knows their shit.

As I recall, once you get past the halfway point of Solatorobo, combat style completely changes, and the story really ups the ante. I remember an article describing it as if the game had its own, self contained sequel, within it.
