Master Posts: 622 Group: Elite Member #62 Joined: November 9, 2009	Here's part of the true evil: they're one of the biggest reasons why crop monoculture is a thing, at least in the US. Previously, seed companies, co-ops, and farmers would hybridize and share crops season to season and you would plant crops adapted to the local climate and weather. You'd have dozens of varieties of corn and soybeans, for instance, and each state could have different types based upon average rainfall and the start of the growing season, etc. Today, Monsanto pushes single use seed and farmers using their seed are contractually obligated to destroy and not replant existing seed. Before, they'd just let excess go to reseed and keep it going year to year. This gives Monsanto an unfair advantage in agriculture, both in a business sense, and in a biological sense. Because farmers are forced to buy new seed each year, they are fully dependent upon Monsanto for their livelihood. Furthermore, Monsanto can ruin farmers in court if they've stepped outside the bounds of their limited contract. Here's the flat-out scary part: they were at one time working on producing what was called a "terminator seed." This genetically engineered crop feature would cause the seed to fail to be viable at the end of the plant's growth cycle and it would never, ever reseed. The problem is Monsanto GM products have been known repeatedly to cross-pollenate with wild-type or hybrid plants in adjacent fields. The fear was this new engineered feature could jump not only between crops, but also pollute or infect other plants nearby, causing risk of ecological breakdown. Now that's just pure evil.
