Ugh. I'm sure they're expected to leave ALL their equipment for Russia to inherit as well.

Non sarcastic answer: Crimea already wanted to break away from Ukraine somehow, but the constitution of that country prevented them from doing so without permission of the entire country. Although the country was set to vote on the chance of having Crimea become more independent from the Central Ukrainian government, Putin didn't want to wait and sent in his troops to "keep the peace" and monitor the vote to just break away and join the Russians. Since armed guards outside the polling place ensure fair and balanced elections.
