I don't expect any less from the masters of shutting down any fan project even remotely associated with their work. I'm surprised they don't personally scour DeviantArt and Fanfiction.net deleting works bearing their characters. |

I personally have never payed any attention to stretch goals on crowdfunded projects. If I'm not interested in the game or if I don't think the game is really good enough, regardless of whether I like it or not, then I don't believe in funding it (which, if I had a steady income, I probably would partake in). This whole tactic of using swag to lure in the overly materialistic isn't just killing crowdfunding, but also conventional, mainstream physical releases. Let's release the new Assassin's Creed in fifty different collector's edition boxes and see which ones sell out more. Honestly? Half the stuff that's offered is kinda lame. Gaming publishers really no longer understand the concept of an artbook considering they're just glorified manuals now, showcasing artwork you can find in the actual manual (if there is one) or the game. Artbooks used to show you concept work, stuff that wasn't released to the public with plenty of commentary. Then there's the issue of the OSTs you get with these, which are actually just samplers with somewhere between 5 to 10 tracks. Atlus does this right, they release these samplers as a standard with first releases of their DS/3DS games, not as incentive to pay more for the product. At the end of the day, I think people are better off just paying for a standard game and getting whatever extra swag they really want off of eBay or something. |

Minecraft made most of its early money by essentially making consumers pay for a public alpha. Then as they added more content to it they jacked the price up along with it, so there was actually an incentive for buying the game literally before it was finished. I'm sure some combination or variation of those factors would work wonders for just about anyone else in lieu of completely funding your game right from the start, though considering this is a point-n-clicker (unless I'm mistaken), I'm not sure how much that could compare beyond simply making the storyline episodic. |
