The problem, as Ekoi said, is finding a spot for it that doesn't obscure any important information. And with the software I'm using at least, it's not possible to freely position the overlay. It has to be in a preset location which, with MMOs at least, all spots are important in one way or another. The right side of the screen houses the minimap, the quest list and inventory/currency displays. Left side has the party list (with Limit Break meter), the enmity list and the log window. The centre? The actual game, plus status indicators, enemy health, parameters, hotbars and the focus target meter. There's also the Alliance lists, for full-raid content, like Labryinth of the Ancients and Syrcus Tower. That doesn't leave any room for a camera overlay. It will obscure something. The question is: Is it worth sacrificing potentially important information just to put a face behind the author? I mean sure, most of the information displayed in the log window that is of actual importance is also displayed briefly in the centre of the screen (EXP and item drops float down the screen, for one) but that doesn't apply to what is said by other players. And some of it (reports of Elite Mark positions, for one) is pretty damn important in its own right. Unfortunately I don't think a green screen would solve the problem. My PC isn't in an enclosed room, like with most professional Let's Players (Markiplier, etc.) and is actually in a sort of kitchen/dining hybrid room. The only viable option is to find out what people would want more: a face, or the log window. EDIT: Though it is worth nothing that all of the HUD elements in FFXIV barring the log window can be freely positioned so it wouldn't be too hard to move the inventory, currency and item/action help windows elsewhere, leaving a fully free section of the screen. Another alternative, as mentioned before, is to position your video so that the facecam is outside of the game's feed, like this: http://i1.minus.com/ibdbHayO0IdCSq.png I know for a fact that it's possible in OBS. TBH, if a facecam is a must, that is my preference since those who don't want to have a facecam can easily obscure that part of the screen with another window or something, those who want it have it, and people who want an unobscured game get that. It's win-win-win. Edited by Ekoi, Jan 7 2015, 03:19 PM.

I honestly don't think anything on-screen is really that important to the viewer, apart from the game itself, especially since it's all too small to read anyway. If an occasion arises where something important does show up, you could just edit the video so that you remove the facecam for that moment and zoom in on it, right? |

I wouldn't say it's a must, but personally it is how I would like to present my videos. I do recall seeing that a lot of livestreamers in particular use that kind of overlay, so I should look into trying to set something similar up (actually I do remember trying to do just that a few months ago when I was testing a livestream; couldn't quite get it to work right though). Hell I could even use that to plug Neo Babylon or whatever. I also need to look into a decent video editor, now that Seeco's brought it up. |

AAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHH This is the finale of the "A Realm Reborn" story. 2.5 Part I will be playable on January 20; 2.51 will drop in February (adding the Gold Saucer, among other things) and the final update to "Before the Fall" (Part II) will arrive in March. After that? HEAVENSWARD!!!! :D Edited by Luffy Foxtrot, Jan 13 2015, 05:04 PM.

I agree that more games should go the F2P if they're going to charge software fees. Granted, FF14 at least has payment plans based on the number of characters your create. (down to like $10/m if you only have like two characters instead of $15 for many characters. Just, pick one. Subs, or software fees. Or at least make the software purchase come with 3 free months to equate its $45 of its cost instead of just one month. |
