Actually, no, I didn't know that about the Onion. Something to keep in mind later on, I guess.

Yeah, it's been around forever, they're over the top satire usually ends up coming true though. Remember Stubenville and how the news media felt bad for the rapists? The Onion had a story just like that about 2 or 3 years earlier.

That and Other opinion pieces are already saying the same thing

I like it when people use the word "gay" in any context other than a homosexual one - it only proves that they have the maturity of a five year old, as if their obsession with shooters didn't already do a good job of pointing that out. It's also pretty amusing that he pointed out Skyrim considering the fact that, y'know, it's set in the bloody medival era and doesn't even have muskets, let alone generic modern firearms.

But just for fun, let's play around with his logic a bit.

game - gun = gay
game + gun = -gay
game + gun + Arem = ???

The kid didn't know he was pulling out a phone.

What does he have to fear from other people walking around a safe gated community? He's searching around houses, gets stopped by someone with a little authority who's business it is to know what's going on, and somehow he's the innocent one because "maybe" he thought his phone was a gun. If I reached into my pocket when walking up to someone at night, that doesn't give the other person the "go ahead" on trying to beat me to death with ninjitsu.

Put yourself in his shoes for a moment; you're out late at night, probably on your way home, when you notice something suspicious. This strange guy's following you in his car. You're scared and figured if you ran, he'd give chase and catch you. One of the smartest things to do to throw a stalker or potential mugger off guard is to confront them and make eye contact, so he did that. The guy said he wasn't following him and he just continued about his business.

If I were in his shoes, well I would know I'm in a gated community (he didn't live in this area). Gated communities have a lot of neighborhood watch guys that look out after the area. What would someone not from the area be doing checking out all the houses on a block, especially with reports of recent break-ins? I'm sorry, but that's suspicious. If you're not from the area at night, people in gated communities will wonder what the heck is going on. You can get jailed just for trespassing. It's been confirmed that Trayvon was on drugs at the time, so I'm not quite sure how I can put my shoes in his place and/or mindset on all the decisions he was making that night, I don't know any deadly martial arts that I'd be ready to use on anyone that comes up to me with a phone either.

It's not like Zimmerman intended on hurting Trayvon, I would have to think his mind was most likely set on justice without force, and words before 911 action. In the heat of the moment of almost being killed by this stranger, I don't think he had time to think quickly of alternate options. On retrospect, one could point the gun at the victim after he regained his gun and just say "freeze or I'll shoot".

In Chicago, we get more shootings a year than U.S. troop killings in Afghanistan, so to us this just sounds like the daily local morning news... and black missing kids... rarely ever in the news. And when they are, it's a 30 sec to 1 minute segment that you wont hear from again. You have a white kid missing, then it's pretty big news. The media is like that, it incites racism, and it itself is racist.

He did something stupid by going after him AFTER the dispatchers told him not to. He followed his gut instead of his head and a kid is dead for it. We're not arguing that he's a murderer; we're arguing that he's an idiot with blood on his hands because he got stupid. Manslaughter, generally speaking, is the act of killing WITHOUT the intent to kill. He should have been slapped for that. I don't believe he's a murderer; I believe he was a fucking nitwit. And he had the balls to demand an apology? I would have kicked them balls for just showing how much of an idiot he is. They let him walk because the prosecution should have gone for manslaughter, not murder.

Plus, he was just a kid. When you were a kid, you had wild thoughts too regarding what a person is doing, because kids can have wild imaginations. He wasn't a mature adult so don't paint him out to have the foresight of one. It's nothing short of faulty reasoning.

Well, hopefully civil court will slap him with restitution. Even if he's "innocent" in the eyes of the law, he's going to have a scarlet letter branded to him for life.

I agree with this. I also live in a gated community, and I feel safer because I know my association money goes to guys that patrol the area more than the police, who tend to have other areas and on-spot calls to handle. Plus I work for 911, so I may be a little more on the law side of things.

ESPECIALLY since he would know the people in the area, and coupled the fact that Trayvon had drugs in his system, he also pounced on the guy, I mean, I've never been under the influence of such drugs, but I think they inhibit your behavior.

And if someone is simply coming up to you, what crime is that? I mean, sure fight or flight might take off, but in the area it's highly unlikely that if either of them had started simply screaming or yelling that someone wouldn't step out and go "oh shit."

In retrospect, yes this truly makes sense. But Trayvon had drugs in his system, and also just jumped onto Zimmerman. If someone is on top of me, and beating me, I don't think I'd have time to threaten a weapon in the form of a verbal warning; nor would Trayvon even possibly be in the right mindset to think "he has a gun, maybe I should back off for a moment."

He did go after him after a dispatcher told him not to, but simply going towards the kid was not the event that was stupid. Granted, we could also say that Trayvon was stupid for jumping on the guy, AFTER he was heading back to his vehicle.

I do know he killed a kid, but actually going to talk to a kid versus jumping on a guy and beating him are two totally different realms.

And the prosecution did fail with it's reasonable doubt. Although I do remember the female witness that was a "star" was completely laughable. And the jurors even asked for a "clarification of manslaughter." So it was considered.

I was never a kid with drugs in my system, walking somewhere I wasn't familiar with, in a gated community, at night. My imagination would be running wild about what a person is doing, but generally, I don't pounce on everyone that comes up to me either.

And this is true. Although it sucks for those who suffer from this same thing, and those who don't get the fair trial and attention they deserve.

I was talking about the press; I know Zimmerman isn't racist; I never suggested otherwise. All I said was that he was an idiot.

The press is treating this like it's some kind of international coverage when there's seriously more important things they could be doing. I swear to god, journalism in its entirety has been infected with celebrity bullshit like TMZ.
