Backwards Compatibility in Consoles

Does backwards compatibility matter to you guys when it comes to buying a new console?

I know with the PS3 the limited support, and then lack of support when I could afford the beast made me skip out on the grill. With rumors of the 360's successor not having backwards compatibility, will that make you sit this round out until more titles are announced? Should companies ensure the previous generation or two work before they work on new features?

Discuss.

It matters a great deal to me, because we're at the age where it shouldn't be a problem. Back in the 90s, sure, there would be issues, but nowadays, not so much.

I like it when people use the word "gay" in any context other than a homosexual one - it only proves that they have the maturity of a five year old, as if their obsession with shooters didn't already do a good job of pointing that out. It's also pretty amusing that he pointed out Skyrim considering the fact that, y'know, it's set in the bloody medival era and doesn't even have muskets, let alone generic modern firearms.

But just for fun, let's play around with his logic a bit.

game - gun = gay
game + gun = -gay
game + gun + Arem = ???

It's pretty important. I'm glad the PS3 can do PS1 games... disappointed it threw away PS2 emulation. But on the plus side it upscaled the graphics when you re-buy some for half the price.

I think that new consoles should at least support games from its previous generation if at all possible, but that's just me thinking of the people who choose to trade in their consoles for the next edition. Me, I'll just keep the console so I don't have to fret/worry.

Hell, even the PS4 won't be directly compatible with the PS3 in any sense, not even the games you bought on the Store will be transferable to the PS4's Store, last I heard.

The Wii U managed barely, through a slightly complex method. But hey, at least it works. It seems that Microsoft and Sony don't really care about their older consoles anymore (especially SCEA in Sony's case).

So yea, I think it's important, but I don't really care anymore, personally.

In this day and age? Yeah, backwards compatibility, in some form or another, should be a standard for consoles. I believe that, if a console has the ability to play a format of any previous console, then it should come equipped with the necessary software to run it. A Blu-Ray player can play DVDs and CDs, so why doesn't the PS3 run PS1 and PS2 games? Because Sony wanted to make you buy all those games you spent years amassing all over again, with BS "HD Collections" coming out of the wazoo every other day.

Aside from games whose format the console can run, the rest of the library should be available digitally. Console developers should make every effort to make every game in previous libraries available and should not force gamers to pay with every new console iteration. Digital games are automatically registered upon purchase, so there is a record that the player bought the game and that record should allow the player to redownload the title again, free of charge. When a new console is developed that ultimately can no longer run a previous media format, the player should be allowed to register said older titles to allow them to be downloaded instead.

There should be some kind of standardised system for backwards compatibility, but console devs are just taking the piss and using whatever way they can to force players to buy everything all over again. Biggest offender here is Microsoft, who has yet to make more than a handful of original Xbox games available to play on a 360.

So I think everyone is in agreement/near agreement that Backwards Compatibility should be required as part of consoles...

So why the hell did Sony pull its PS3 bs and this talk about no backwards compat on Durango? Money? They have a lot more to lose if they go through with it.

It is. Reality, however, tells me that console developers are going to trim that feature off...which is why I hoard previous consoles like a squirrel hoards nuts.

Simple: there's moneygolds in making people pay for a digital re-release of a game they already own and can't play otherwise.

It's worth noting that backwards compatibility strongly contributed to the PS3's ridiculous price tag (the other factor obviously being Blu Ray) - the nature of the hardware meant they had to essentially cram a whole PS2 into it to make it work, and duct-taping two consoles together like that ain't cheap. The 360 tried to bypass this with software updates to make old games more compatible with the newer hardware, but as you can plainly see it's impractical as fuck when it requires you to sift through every fucking individual game - most of the library went completely ignored, and even the ones that made the cut tended to suffer from annoying technical issues (like being able to see certain light sources through walls in Thief 3 and Breakdown). Even the Wii, in spite of having virtually perfect emulation, doesn't allow you to save to the hard drive and isn't compatible at all with newer controllers, so until my WiiU I always had these ugly fucking ports poking out of the top of it all the time. I mean, think about it - counting Cube pads, individual wiimotes and nunchuks, that's twelve controllers you're bound to have lying around at any given time, plus at least one external memory card. And that's not even accounting for classic controllers. What the fuck makes them think I want that kind of clutter?

Backwards compatibility can be a neat little bonus to a new console, but it's just not worth the effort if it forces them to butcher it while they're at it.
