Alright, so after a few days of Destiny withdrawal I'm ready to give my thoughts.

First off, this definitely was too polished to be an Alpha. It had to either be the E3 Demo or something else because there was a ton going on.

So, if you look at Destiny and your first thought is "Boarderlands by way of Halo" you are 100% right on the money because that's exactly how it plays. It's Boarderlands' free roaming and questing system with the technical feel of a Halo game. And I loved every minute of it. But allow me to step back for a moment and go though the play by play of this Alpha.

So I started off by choosing from 3 different classes: Titan (A heavy weapons kind of character), Hunter (A run and gun character with an emphasis on speed) and Warlock ("Spell" based; very akin to the Sirens of Boarderlands). I decided to go with the Hunter. I then chose from 3 different races: Human, Awakened (humanoid aliens) and EXOs (Robot people!). Character customization is very straight forward. There are enough options to make your character look cool, but nothing with a say, Dark Souls or Mass Effect level of intricacy.

After creation I was dropped into the game. First thing I noticed: THIS GAME IS BEAUTIFUL. I think this has really been the first truly "Next Gen" experience I've had on my PS4 and I am so glad I was able to. It truly is a feast for an eyes, with light peeking behind the trees, particles of dust and snow floating in the air, and light reflecting off the puddles of water that you walk over. And that's a lot of detail for a supposed alpha. Also, you have a vehicle on you at all times that you can summon to get you to places faster, which is very convenient.

Anyway, I was playing what was referred to as a "Story Mission"; a fairly liner objective where I had to go to some base to inspect a relic of some kind? Anyway, I invited a friend of mine to my party and within a couple of moments, he literally dropped into my game and we ventured onward. Combat is handled very similar to Boarderlands, in that you can see how much damage you're doing with every given shot. Loot comes in two forms; one is actual equipment and the others are these Encrypted items that you have to go to a Shop on the space station to uncover what they actually are.

I won't go into every detail of the story mission, but it was essentially your standard FPS level, with one major difference. As we were on our way, we came across a downed ship with a quest beacon. We accepted the quest and it initiated a public event. 3 more people showed up and suddenly we were fighting off waves of enemies while our Ghost (read: personal 343 Guilty Spark) was scanning the wreckage. Once the quest was completed, our other cohorts vanished. It was a really cool little moment that I'm glad exists in the game.

Once the Story mission was over, I was able to see the full scope of the game through the map screen.

So we have the space station where you can buy all of your equipment and etc; you know, the standard RPG/MMORPG fare. It handles like a hub in say, Phatasy Star Online or WoW in that it's a thrid person view and kind of a central hub where all of the characters are spamming the hilarious dance command.

Now, going back to the map of Earth, I could see that gameplay in Destiny is separated into 4 different kinds of modes:

Story Mission: Exactly what it is: A mission in the main story where you have to complete a certain objective. You may be able to participate in a Public Event as well.

Free Roam: I was teleported back to the exact stage that the Story Mission took place in, but now I could free roam the entire area and see all of the places that I missed due to the objective. You spend it by going to various mission beacons and do quests that, in this alpha, really were "Kill this specific dude" or "Kill X amount of dudes" or "Scan this area". I'm assuming there will be more quest variety when the game comes out. The REAL interesting part about this though is that occasionally, you'll run into other people online just going about their business. You might work together to do something, or you might just pass each other like it's nothing. It gives a really good feeling that you're living in a breathing, populated world.

Raid: Essentially an instance of sorts. You're teamed up with (in this specific case) 2 other people to face enemies that are more powerful than you and you take on GIGANTIC Bosses. The standout for me here was a boss that was this giant AT-AT kind of walker that was stationed in this massive room that we had to take down. It took a good 15 minutes of concentrated fire and kiting lasers, but it was ultimately a satisfying experience. I was working with my friends, but if you were alone, the game would match you up with two random people. I would say that for this specific mission maybe one or two more people would have been much more helpful, because it gets REALLY overwhelming sometimes.

Crucible: It's PVP. Not much more I can really say aside from that. I played your normal Conquest style mode and it was really solid.

Now you see that I've been comparing this to Boarderlands a lot but here's the thing: I absolutely HATE Boarderlands. I find it to be a tiring grind that just doesn't hold my interest. This, however does. Maybe it's the aesthetic, maybe it's the approach to how it handles the different style of stages, maybe its the seamless integration with its online components, but something just clicks with me. I really look forward to the beta and its eventual release.

If you all have any questions, definitely let me know!

Sounds like it so far. This has me excited. BRING ON THE BETA!

Honestly, if I like the beta enough, I may find myself buying that white PS4 Destiny bundle because I really like the look of it. That's assuming we don't get a PS4 earlier, which is unlikely. So, if I have a fun time, I'll start saving up. Yes.

Well, you've got me interested. At first I was gonna bitch about the comparisons to Borderlands, but seeing as it's the few GOOD qualities of the games, then I'm down.

I forget, are we getting this on PC?

Yea, it's currently just consoles for now, excluding handhelds and Wii U *sadface*

I would like to think that they'll release a PC version, but I don't think Activision even cares about PC. Have they actually released anything on PC? Because I've lately been craving Skylanders SWAP Force on my PC. Which'll never happen, but still. It'd be a nice thing to have.

Activision used to be really good buddies with the PC. Guess that's changed. Ah well, as long as it happens at all, I can wait.

I'm getting this on One, where the Beta will be too. And I will start trying to use the capture abilities of the One to share some of those said screens and feelings. :)

Rated Teen

While I believe this is the same idiot that said "MK8 WILL SELL LOW HURRDURR" he does make some good points about the rating making it more available to a wider audience.

Kotick mouthed off earlier about Destiny's budget costing 500 million bucks, but Bungie brings us back to reality claiming that, regarding development, it's not true. This might help put other companies' claims of massive million dollar budgets into the AAA industry into perspective.
