After a short but troubled life, Square Enix MMORPG, Final Fantasy XIV, is being taken offline. In honour of the occasion and the game, Square Enix released an “End of an Era” cinematic trailer that shows the Eorzean Alliance taking a last stand against the Garlean Empire:

Square Enix aren’t killing Final Fantasy XIV, though—they’re rebooting it as Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn, which will be a complete ground-up overhaul that addresses many of the game’s issues. A Realm Reborn is currently in alpha-testing, and Square have said they’ll bring Final Fantasy XIV back online for players that want to play it until A Realm Reborn launches.

So, will this reboot be actually any better, or will it just be more of the same?

Please don't ask Squaresoft about more of the same.

So how will this affect the still unreleased PS3 version? Either way, as long as I don't miss out on actually playing this, I'll be happy, as I've been kind of interested. Shame that I'll most likely miss out on experiencing the original version, as I'm not touching the game unless I find a physical PC disc.

...still haven't downloaded FFXI from Steam yet, despite buying the Ultimate Edition about a year or so ago. Whoops.

You're better off not having played this, XIV is known to be one of the worst MMOs on the market, all the way back from the beta testing stage. It's just a hundred steps backwards after XI, there were so many useful things removed and none of the issues with the older game being fixed.

I literately played closed and open betas and different stages of the launch.

There is almost nothing that can be done to make the game worse. Reverting to an older system for ___ would be better, using a new system would be better, there was just so much combined bad and bland you'd need an essay to begin to describe why it was bad.

When japan players hate a FF game, you know something is horribly wrong.
