Over the course of the past week, I've been following LGBT news in comics, and very shortly after Obama said he would support gay marriage, there's been a cascade of news in the comics industry regarding the "progress" of LGBT comic characters: DC Comics announces the coming out of an iconic character in the very near future. Speculation is high on whom, but other articles state it will be a person who has not been revealed in the new 52 reboot series yet, and is male. Rather new Archie comic character gets married; issue sells out despite threat of boycotts. Granted, this happened two months ago, but it was a hot topic for quite a while, despite Archie Comics not being the most featured comic line. Just the same, the Archie exec was ballsy to the AFA and One Million Moms. :D X-Men Northstar proposes to long-time boyfriend in Astonishing X-Men #50, will be married in Issue #51 next month. The last two are rather important, because they are not only gay marriages, but interracial marriages; the first of either kind in comic book history, and at the same time! I mainly wouldn't have posted this, but the sheer cascade of these news made me want to share. Archie may have made history for being the first gay marriage in comic book history (featuring one as a Marine), but Marvel has been working the grindstone for this for a long time, especially since Rictor's and Shatterstar's first kiss, and Northstar's coming out in the 80s. While Spoiler: click to toggle , Northstar and his "normal" boyfriend, Kyle Jinadu, will be the first in superhero comic history to be married. DC has always been really really dry for LGBT characters, but apparently, they decided to finally step up.Needless to say, I'm stoked. Edited by Arem, May 24 2012, 05:22 AM.

I'm in no sense complaining, but comics seem to be synched with current politics and media changing stories only to make a point that's already been made or follow other comic's paths to create more publicity for themselves. They should spread out these events from various comics so it doesn't look like they're all trying to copy each other. Still, it's good to see support.

I'm in agreement with what Havoc said; it does seem a lot like the industry tries to curry favour by mirroring current events. Either way, it's good to see more support I suppose, despite how gay characters in comics aren't really a new thing. |

Oh certainly, they aren't a new thing, but they usually end up as background characters and rarely get to be in the center spotlight. That's what was awesome about the Wiccan x Hulkling couple because it quickly became mainstream, despite not a lot of issues with the Young Avengers currently. |

I just wanna say that I have no problem with gay characters. Northstar getting married? Long time coming. Wiccan and Hulkling? Wasn't surprised when I reached the end of Children's Crusade (Damn good miniseries btw, even if the ending pissed me off). I haven't followed much of Young Avengers but they were very convincing as a couple. That being said, I've heard a lot flying around about the DC character. Some fool somewhere said Aquaman, not knowing that he's happily married to Mera and has been for a LONG time, one of the first marriages in comic books if I recall (in 1964 according to wikipedia, that's a long time). This was shot down pretty quick. Unfortunately now I'm hearing another one: ALAN SCOTT And apparently it's confirmed. No idea who that is? Well, he was the very first Green Lantern. Before the Corps, before Hal Jordan, Alan Scott was fighting using a magic (not super-science) ring. Alan was one of my favorite characters, even though I was born long after his run ended. His early appearances had him as your basic champion of justice, not too different from Hal Jordan's initial appearance, but eventually he settled in to the role of being an older, very wise hero who looked to encourage a younger generation. And he had children! Todd aka Obsidian was already an openly gay character! I had no problem with this! Obsidian was an awesome character. My biggest problems with this decision come from two things: One. It was literally done on a whim. James Robinson (Who wrote a depressing little series called Justice League: Cry for Justice where they killed a little girl who happened to be the daughter one of my favorite characters, putting him in the gutter) said this: "I was sort of putting the team together and I realized one of the only downsides to relaunching the Justice Society as young, vibrant heroes again was that Alan Scott's son was no longer going to exist in the reboot, I thought that was a shame and then it occurred to me, why not just make Alan Scott gay." Two. Not only does it write Obsidian out of existence, it also writes out one of my favorite DC characters. ![]() Jade was easily one the most underrated DC Heroines ever, and now she's gone. James Robinson seems to take great pleasure in ruining things for me. Red Arrow in Justice League had become one of my favorite characters in not just DC, but comics in general, then hey! Let's kill his adorable little daughter so we can make him DARK AND EDGY. Now Alan Scott not only doesn't have his children, he's not going to even get the chance to have them thanks to this decision. Again, I have no problem with gay characters. I support it fully. But you don't. fucking. do that. to characters like this. I don't care if it's a universe reboot, you don't need to make Alan Scott gay to make him interesting again. What's more interesting, him being gay or his son being gay and he supports him the whole way? Which do you think sends a more powerful message? Don't even get me STARTED on the ENORMOUS plotholes Jade's not existing puts in the Green Lantern storyline, the only story left completely untouched by the universe reboot, but that's a rant for another time. |

Yeah, I've found other sites saying that the first Green Lantern in Earth 2, aka Alan Scott, is the new gay DC guy. I was kind of hoping it was someone from...well...Earth 1, but I suppose beggars can't be choosers. As it turns out, there was a DC issue of a gay couple getting married, but it was rather under the radar in publishing, so many people missed it. Apollo and Midnighter if I remember right. |

I actually think that was on one of DC's imprints before the reboot merged all of those together. ... Wildstorm Comics I think it was? I know it wasn't Vertigo Comics. |

As a side-note: One Million Moms got banned from facebook as a hate group over their protest of the new green lantern. So there's that. |
