Months after a Korean rating started us thinking up ridiculous fantasies about Dragon Ball Z Kinect, Namco Bandai has announced the game, due in October, at a press event in Las Vegas. Players will get control of over 50 characters (including Mr. Pointyhair, karate guy, green man, and the little one) and perform real DBZ-style moves gesturally.

QR codes will (somehow) be distributed to unlock extra characters, because trying to focus a lamp on a card so the game will read it is a super important part of Dragon Ball lore.

Update: Namco provided additional details in a press release. Developed by Spike Chunsoft, DBZ Kinect offers a "Story Mode" and a "Score Attack" mode. Story mode features first-person battles and CG event scenes based on the show's storyline, while score attack is a series of one-on-one battles for points.

I see Chunsoft's name there, which has me curious.

It seems like every two years we get a new one around October. I was kinda expecting a Kinect one at some point, but I'm so turned off by Kinect right now because of its uselessness and delayed / not always responsive controls. I'll have to see it in action before having a true opinion on it. The last DBZ game highly disappointed me more than any other game I've bought, so my faith in the franchise has gone down.

I mean, how are they going to handle the flying now? Jump a few inches in that air and lean side to side? A fighting game like this would wipe a person out after a few battles, if it's even good...

I remember the first Wii DBZ game was marketed like this - you know, performing Kamehameha gestures just like the show did - but then it turned out to be a bunch of irrelevant wiimote flicks/thrusts that had absolutely no relation to what was going on onscreen. I expect a Kinect game to be either exactly that - ie: motion control pasted onto a previous game that absolutely was not built to actually be motion controlled - or to be so accurate to the show gestures that it actively hurts the game in the process, just like a lot of other stupid Kinect games have a tendency to do.

And to think I considered DBZ games to be increasing in quality around the time of Raging Blast 1. What the hell happened? Do they enjoy sabotaging everything they've been trying to build up to since?

They improved it in Raging Blast 2, just after that... with that Ultimate whatever game... shit started sucking. But that's only one game recently that broke it's good streak. Though, I never cared for the Burst Limit games. I just hope it's a free-roaming type like the RB games, and not so much like a typical fighter.

Second game actually, you're talking about Budokai Tenkaichi 3, right? It wasn't THAT bad, but yeah, I can see where you're coming from. Personally, I've already been burned out on the series and there isn't really anything keeping me interested anymore. The fact that it's a Kinect game is actually a huge turnoff for me.

If they DO have it so you perform the gestures exactly, that's gonna be a hell of a workout.

Honestly I can see this going the way of Star Wars Kinect (though, to be honest, all I actually have seen of this is it went from lightsaber fighting and force gestures to dancing to I'm Han Solo)

Tenkaichi 2, actually. If there were any Wii games prior to that I'll be quite surprised.

And now we have screenshots.

I'm more than pretty sure this wont be as good as the games you use a controller with, but I'm still a little intrigued. It looks like it's set up more like a boxing match.... dbz battles are like 20% "boxing" on the show or in the games themselves. They would need to add a bit more variety to the way it's played. We needs vids!

Yeah, if only they were your actual actions and not a pre-determined calculated position that the game tells you to make while registering it .6 seconds later :P

Well at least they're trying to be more innovative this time around.

Oh shush. I must be the only person who doesn't face severe problems when playing on the Kinect. Still, majorly awaiting this game. I will follow information about it religiously. ;_;

Given my room setup, the only Kinect game I have that I can enjoy decently is Fruit Ninja Kinect. Aside from issues on my end, the device works really well from my point of view. I just wish I had a way to experience the full potential of Kinect ;~;

My Kinect has been fairly responsive, especially considering the environment it has to look at. :P

Just the same, being someone who isn't interested in DBZ, I'll pass.

I like it when people use the word "gay" in any context other than a homosexual one - it only proves that they have the maturity of a five year old, as if their obsession with shooters didn't already do a good job of pointing that out. It's also pretty amusing that he pointed out Skyrim considering the fact that, y'know, it's set in the bloody medival era and doesn't even have muskets, let alone generic modern firearms.

But just for fun, let's play around with his logic a bit.

game - gun = gay
game + gun = -gay
game + gun + Arem = ???

I'm pretty sure it was Tenkaichi 3 that had the motion controls. Tenkaichi 2 was just a straight port of the PS2 version, whereas Tenkaichi 3 added those weird controls and online play from the PS2 version.

I still think the Kinect is a joke and shouldn't have even been attempted until this technology had matured more. Besides, you can't expect for accurate movement registration with only one camera, to do something that they intended, you'd need more to pick up your movements a lot better. It's like wrestling with a game's bad controls, the Kinect won't work the way you want it to for this game, believe you me.
