Quote:

Tucked away behind a registration wall, Digital Foundry's Richard Leadbetter has heard from what he claims to be a reputable source that the upcoming Sony console—the PlayStation 4—is "essentially a PC" in terms of its technological make-up.

He writes that Sony and AMD are collaborating on the console's CPU, moving away from the PS3's Cell architecture to an x86 processor for the new console. He cites the Vita's architecture as a fundamental shift in the company's manufacturing of consoles.

"It's not about exotic, groundbreaking hardware anymore, it's all about creating the best possible games machine with an enviable set of development tools - and it's an approach that has already yielded results," he wrote. "While PlayStation Vita may lack a stand-out killer app, I still think that it's set the bar in terms of overall quality and quantity over and above any console launch I've seen in over 21 years in the business. Extrapolating that same philosophy towards PlayStation 4 makes a PC-style approach to Sony's next console seem very likely indeed."

For the doubters, it means the PlayStation 4 is pulling out all the stops with AMD and ATI integrated graphics. That architecture gives them a lot of mileage and room for more memory and better bandwidth, as there's no bottleneck between the CPU and the graphics processor.

More information about Sony's new console is expected to be revealed at the upcoming E3 2012 in June.

This sounds pretty fail if you ask me. Why develop something that supposedly competes with a PC when a PC can be constantly upgraded? On that note, I still don't see anything wrong with sticking to the PS3 for another five years considering it's top of the line hardware already. Are Sony and Microsoft really that threatened by the Wii U that they need to come out with half assed consoles just to compete with something that will essentially be on par with what's already on the market?

Yes. That's really the only explanation I can think of for them going back on their initial claim that the PlayStation Move and Kinect would extend the life of their respective consoles by three years, at least.

The PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 still have massive support, but if Sony is pulling this route, we're going to see the same thing happen to the PS3 as what's happened to the PSP. Sony's English branches phasing out the PS3 long before the PS4 releases, despite the fact that, like the PSP/Vita, the PS3 will still have massive development support in Japan weeks or even months after the PS4 launches.

....Aren't all consoles basically built like PCs these days?

More or less, yeah, so this just could be more instances of companies talking out of their asses. On that note, the PS3 was a lot like a PC when it was first released, you know, before they started pulling features from it and leading people like Geohotz to try to jailbreak it. I don't think anyone's falling for that a gain after what Sony did last time.

The next PlayStation is reportedly codenamed "Orbis," according to Kotaku. Their unnamed source provides details and specs... and the news that "Orbis" will also be utilising an anti-used games feature not unlike Microsoft's new console, the "Durango."

Said feature seems to be that, similar to how Steam works, purchasing a retail disc will require you to have "Orbis" connected to the Internet so that you can register the game to a PSN ID. No Internet on the console and you can't even play the game. If you choose to trade the game in for something else at a store like GameStop/EB Games, someone owning a pre-owned copy of the game will be locked out of the full game until they pay a fee to register the game to their own account. Sort of like the Online Pass, except it applies to the whole game and not just the online aspect.

Considering that Sony have been on the Online Pass bandwagon since their releases of games like Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception and Ratchet & Clank: All 4 One, naturally they'd go for this method next. Doesn't mean it's a good idea.

Here's an alternate source for Arem. And any others who can't view Kotaku and its related sites.

EDIT: Also, no PS3 backwards compatibility either, apparently.

Ugh, these companies, I swear. Let them continue to throw millions of dollars to fight something completely legal and is of absolutely no threat to them in the first place.

Unrelated, but I can't find an appropriate topic. Sony has fully purchased the Gaikai cloud gaming service with reported intentions to either upgrade the cloud storing feature that PSN+ users already have, or create a brand new cloud offering.

And now new rumours have surfaced that Sony are releasing a PlayStation Slim v2.0. So, not quite PS4-ish in terms of news, but the first image with the label has a very clear "PlayStation 3" written in the text. Take this how you will.

I think it's probably a little more than a rumor, a bunch of evidence has been posted in the last week or so. If the only purpose of it is to be smaller, it sounds like a dumb idea.

Personally, until Sony officially comes out and says "Yes, this is real," then a rumour is all it is.

Which will make the price here about 600-ish, at least, assuming that price does turn out to be correct. Given Sony's track record for ridiculous launch prices, I bet the US price will end up even higher.

I'm inclined to think otherwise. Sony's been nothing but stupid business decisions these past few years, from my experience. So I'm expecting the worst. Guess we'll get some rough idea on the 20th, assuming that this meeting is actually about "Orbis."

PS1 and PS2 were both $300 at launch, same as the vita too. Just because the PS3 was expensive at launch doesn't mean the next will be.
I'd put money down on betting it too... any takers? :P
