So, as a recap, this all started when Tim Schaffer made an announcement that his company, Double Fine, would create an adventure game if gamers who want it so bad were willing to fund it. The target goal was some $400 000 and not only did they reach that number in less than a day, but they eventually hit over a million dollars. So now:

This is pretty huge; a small company like Double Fine is now able to create a game that both they and the consumers want, as well as being able to self publish it with the funds they gained from said consumerbase. If this is successful, it could be the first step for devs to finall shirk off the shackles of the industry by no longer needing to conform to the hassles of publishing through big companies...companies that compromise the game's quality and integrity by making ludicrous demands and alterations to garner more profit for less capital.

Double Fine Adventure Surpasses 2 Million on Kickstarter

So, that Double Fine Adventure Kickstarter. You know, the one you contributed to. With 22 days left on the campaign, the total sits at $2,005,826 -- 501 percent of the developer's $400,000 goal.

When the project hit its goal (in about eight hours), Double Fine studio head Tim Schafer said the extra money would go into more production values for the games and accompanying 2 Player Productions documentary. The result of that, so far, has been multiplatform, multilingual development of the game.

How many of the world's 6,909 known languages can Double Fine translate into, if the money keeps rolling in like this? Think of all the populations who have never experienced an adventure game!

The genera is dead (outside of France and Germany) for some pretty good reasons.

I recall reading some figures about how these types of adventure games just don't sell that much.

Another issue with this project is how to get profit out of this. While they have well exceeded their initial goal, if they use the excess for spending on the game then they still aren't getting profit as all these backers are already receiving the finished game and whatever other swag guaranteed to them.

This is a niche genera as it is, and seemingly most of its fanbase is funding it; how are the developers going to otherwise profit from it?

And 6000+ languages for a game at this budget so far? Many studios can hardly be arsed with translating into eight languages with games with far less text and subtitles with bigger wallets. Such a text-reliant game would be lucky to reach eight languages at this point.

I'm not terribly sure that the phrases "niche genre" and "2 million dollars in donations" belong in the same train of thought. But I digress.

The bigger question is, why should profit even have to enter into the equation? It certaintly shouldn't here, seeing as they've been spared both the trouble of putting a single cent of their own money into the game, and the insufferable, borderline blasphemous franchise/developer rape that almost certaintly would've resulted from any publisher interested in funding the project on their behalf. Honestly, it might seem like an overly noble and generous thing for a developer to do at first, but they can't lose any money from the project on account of not spending any, so saying "fuck profits, let's just make a game" really isn't all that unreasonable if the money comes exclusively from people who don't have nearly the same strictness as your typical publisher does.

Also, just wanna kick this misconception down before it spreads - in no form has Double Fine actually stated they will actually translate the game into literally six thousand fucking languages. In fact, the Joystiq article linked in the article in the second post explicitly states support for five languages, English included. No idea how you managed to construe a journalist's closing jokes as an actual statement by Double Fine, but hey, I'm sick and have barely had any sleep for 4-5 days so I'm hardly one to judge.

That all said though, I'd really like to hear an update on this that isn't basically Double Fine bragging about how much money their fans have thrown at them.

In the media industry? Sales are among a top freaking priority. This is a hard truth, one that I hate, trust me. 63,396(and counting) backers, 63,396 sales they won't be getting. Assuming the game sales for $40 new, that's $2,535,840 in sales lost, or if you want to do $15 new, $950,940.(which is still a notable amount of money to recover from if they truly aren't just pocketing everything over the initial 400g's) While they are currently saving themselves money by keeping it PC and Mobile only, they're going to be spending more money if they go for console.

When I think of games that are popular for flopping hard on the market, two that quickly come to mind are Psychonauts and Brutal Legend. Wait a minute, who was in charge of these games? Lets see... Double Fine and Double Fine. I'm pretty sure that these are two big reasons why they've had difficulty in finding publishers for their larger projects.

In a perfect world, yeah every project would be funded by the customers and we'd be able to enjoy the piece of art they developed. However this is not the case. If this project bombs at the end, either financially or because of the game being of low quality, you can bet your ass you won't see something like this happen for a long time, and that Double Fine will be double-fucked.

I was mainly mocking the idea for my own amusement.

In-fucking-deed. Outside the genera of game, we know jack fucking shit about this project that people are blindly investing into. This is my main problem with this kickstarter. Just because you have famous names working on something doesn't mean it will be well received. James Cameron still gets shit from a notable amount of critics and viewers due to Avatar and the WHYGODS sequel that's planned for it.

This could end up being a horribly weeaboo artstyled game about chimeric dick monsters invading glorious Nipon for all we know.
