Raining on your parade with a truckload of awkward awesomeness.

Let's start by looking back on Korokage's post in the Awesome Thread, shall we?

Initiallly showing up as a background character in My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic, Derpy Hooves was more or less affectionately crafted to existence by the fanbase (not just the "bronies") and was recently canonly placed in the forefront as a nod to the fandom in the episode The Last Roundup. Now, due to some unfortunate negative reactions that have been claiming Derpy to be "offensive to the mentally challenged", it's possible that Derpy will be removed from the series (or at least just renamed to "Ditzy Doo", from what I'm seeing elsewhere) and the studio behind the series may not ever acknowledge the fandom again.

I'm having trouble looking up a decent source link and any other links are pretty much overreacting to the problem at hand. These are the best I can find:

http://andrewawilson.tumblr.com/post/16949211795/save-derpy

http://metaknighttu.tumblr.com/post/16956780809/derpy-controversy

http://metaknighttu.tumblr.com/post/16964743171/derpy-controversy-again

http://metaknighttu.tumblr.com/post/16965669791/derpy-controversy-last-time-i-promise

http://metaknighttu.tumblr.com/post/16976849607/more-about-derpy

So yea, a fair number of people didn't take kindly to the episode and started sending e-mails to not only Hasbro Studios and DHX Media Vancouver (everyone seems to call it Studio B, despite it being renamed to DHX Media Vancouver back in September 2010) but even the writer of this particular episode herself, Amy Keating Rodgers.

I did kinda think in the back of my mind about that problem, it's a weird message to people who just don't get where it comes from and don't like the idea.
But this is 2012... can't we evolve a little and just work with it?

It could end up being a good message, on how to deal with other kids who actually have disabilities or something.

Also... I thought she was on Jeopardy or something? XD

Oh look, Americans being oversensitive and politically correct to the point where people need to breathe in a specific manner for it to be suitable for the impressionable young'uns. No, I'm sorry, this is just bullshit, how is Derpy offensive exactly? Are you telling me that there aren't any other cartoons out there with stupid, clumsy characters? Or is this suddenly a big deal because she's crosseyed? I bet it wouldn't make a difference if it was some generic Ogre henchman enemy type character, because it's okay for bad people to be dumb, but not the sweet and innocent role models for the kiddies, right?

Grow the fuck up people, pull your heads out of your asses and try to enjoy something that's sole purpose is for entertainment. Why the fuck does everything have to have some kind of godamn hidden agenda? OH TEH NOES I R TEH OFFENDED! This is Sarah Palin trying to sue Family Guy all over again. >.>;

Yeah, it's pretty much gotten that way. Soccer moms are the most offended by dumb shit like that. We've had our fair share of borderline retarded characters.

It's funny because Pete has made a recent comeback with the new Looney Tunes Show. On that note, this comment from one of those petitions, especially the last paragraph, pretty much says it all:

Quote:

The argument against the name "Derpy" is that it's ableist. While potentially true, this has been blown out of context from the one scene being overanalysed. In context, the character has been largely displayed in integrated (albeit background) social roles, without any discrimination present.

Additionally, the previous (now non-canon) name that was assumed for this character, "ditzy doo" (a name which might also imply stupidity or clumsiness), was given for a pony who was held responsible for one of the major social activities of the Ponyville community during the Winter Wrap-up episode. Two years running. She messed up both times, but this wasn't held against her. If we assume her to be a "handicapped character, then this clearly displays Anti-ableism.

As for the name "Derpy" itself (and its negative connotations), it is no different to "Goofy", a cartoon character who has been displayed on TV for decades. A silly name for a cartoon character does not provoke, incite or encourage Ableist thinking, and I can find no evidence to the contrary.

I believe I've ranted about this on Tumblr recently after finding out that the artist of a comic I used to enjoy reading was one of the people making a fuss.

Yes, let’s take out of the show the pony that is construed to have mental disabilities so we don’t offend people who get upset about being excluded from representation.

And let’s stop selling Homer Simpson and Goofy and Tom & Jerry merchandise too, they’re dumb characters who are obviously mentally retarded and thus offensive!

Seriously. We can’t please all of the people all of the time, but some of you aren’t pleased any of the time. It’s a cartoon fucking pony, it’s a word made up by a cartoon that is intended to be offensive, and it’s an endearing character that some people are offended by because she shows typical cartoon stupidity signs and happens to be walleyed.

Isn’t it just as bad you people saying she MUST represent disability if she’s walleyed, clumsy and socially awkward? Oh wait, you already thought of a counter-argument for that, I guess I can’t use it as part of my argument now. Too fuckin’ bad.

I might not have any disabilities but I sure as hell wouldn’t complain if they put a fat or depressed or socially abandoned or academically-stressed pony in the sho— OH WAIT THEY ALREADY DID! I’m not going to petition for them to never air Party of One or never have Mrs Cake or Twilight Sparkle in an episode again.

But you know, we had to change the name of the Fat Conductor, so I guess Mrs Cake will have to shed a few pounds, and Pinkie can never be shown as Pinkamena again. And I don’t think I heard anybody complaining about Lesson Zero, despite the fact that there are lots of things heard about kids committing suicide due to not getting the perfect expected grades their parents pressured them to get.

sdfsdgugh.

I now link you to Morgan Freeman’s view on racism as a reference for my closing argument.

If having a character that might be mentally handicapped is grounds for getting that character banned from TV, I'm surprised that Family Guy and South Park (shows that have actual mentally handicapped characters) haven't been pulled yet.

Except those are different demographics and different age groups with their own ratings...
