Building on months of rumors and speculation regarding a Watchmen sequel, DC officially announced this morning that they will publish seven all-new, inter-connected prequel mini-series set in the WATCHMEN universe. The official press release, available on DC’s The Source blog, described the mini-series as being “as highly anticipated as they are controversial.”

The seven titles will all fall under the “Before Watchmen” manner, with cover design reminiscent of the original series, the collected edition of which is now hailed as the “bestselling graphic novel of all time.”

The titles and creative teams debuted with the announcement include:

RORSCHACH (4 issues) – Writer: Brian Azzarello. Artist: Lee Bermejo
MINUTEMEN (6 issues) – Writer/Artist: Darwyn Cooke
COMEDIAN (6 issues) – Writer: Brian Azzarello. Artist: J.G. Jones
DR. MANHATTAN (4 issues) – Writer: J. Michael Straczynski. Artist: Adam Hughes
NITE OWL (4 issues) – Writer: J. Michael Straczynski. Artists: Andy and Joe Kubert
OZYMANDIAS (6 issues) – Writer: Len Wein. Artist: Jae Lee
SILK SPECTRE (4 issues) – Writer: Darwyn Cooke. Artist: Amanda Conner

And this is why I no longer take the comic book industry seriously. I bet Alan Moore's having a field day with this.

I like it when people use the word "gay" in any context other than a homosexual one - it only proves that they have the maturity of a five year old, as if their obsession with shooters didn't already do a good job of pointing that out. It's also pretty amusing that he pointed out Skyrim considering the fact that, y'know, it's set in the bloody medival era and doesn't even have muskets, let alone generic modern firearms.

But just for fun, let's play around with his logic a bit.

game - gun = gay
game + gun = -gay
game + gun + Arem = ???

All things considered, I wouldn't be surprised if that's the next step.

Some random Tumblr user decided to express opinions over how this is a bad idea.

Nothing but praise for what was said (in both links), but I do have something to add:

Quote:

It’s good to see new creators taking on these characters. it’s good to have fresh voices reaching into these characters.

Both of them forgot to address this; this issue is also one of the main things rotting the industry from within and it's the main reason comic writers and artists today try their damndest to remain independant and own all their own creations. I won't say no good has come out of popular characters being put through the hands of various writers and artists, but in the long run, it has been bad. Each writer and artist has their own interpretation of what this character should be and no one can see eye to eye with each other on every aspect of said character.

In the end, we get convoluted messes of storylines, crossovers, big events and a ton of shit that are the main reason the industry goes through a retcon each Tuesday. They keep running off and not getting anywhere, overdeveloping characters and making ridiculous changest to things that the only way to fix the mess is to erase practically everything and start over. It's the reason a large bulk of the fanbase is just so embittered by Marvel and DC, because all they're good for, aside from mainstream media adaptations of their properties, is a good laugh at how many times Jean Grey has been revived, or how Batman went from total badass to abusive sociopathic foster parent, or whether Wolverine will show up on the cover of the next comic, despite the fact that he's not even featured in it.

The industry's become a joke, it's why the two articles from above are more apathetic about these prequels than raging.
