I'm a huge LOTR fan and a movie of The Hobbit is a long time coming.

The Winds of Change Posts: 1,254 Group: Elite Member #11 Joined: March 7, 2007	God, I wish they had Brother Theodore and the animated Gollum; so damned creepy. This one always reminded me of some Ethiopian, which is really not frightening or strange in any way. Anyways, I'm all for singing. Definitely one of my favorite parts of the original, just how well they integrated the songs into their traveling. On another note, watching that trailer, there's a lot of things that happen that I don't remember happening in the book, and if they did it wasn't in the same way. It looks like they really put a lot of focus on Gandalf in the trailer, as well as the side characters from the other films/books. And was that broken sword supposed to be Narsil?

It's even shown in the other Lord of the Rings movies. As far as Gandalf is, he's pretty involved in the entire first half of the book, and disappears for something through most of the second.

He shows up to dick around, gives words of advice, explains what the hell is going on most of the time, but otherwise the narrative couldn't really give two damns about him unless he's speaking. The trailer makes it look like he's this brooding guy with deepset issues instead of a wizard who vanishes at the most inopportune times, and shows up when everyone fucked up and needs a deus ex machina to save them. Except he's absolutely useless against wargs.

Posts: 17,366 Group: All Powerful Deity Member #1 Joined: December 30, 2005	Guys, it's Hollywood; the only reason Gandalf is getting so much screentime/trailerface is because it's probably in Ian McKellen's contract because he's a big celebrity and shit. That and the fact that he'd be the only familiar actor from the LOTR trilogy for the ignorant masses who've never read the books to familiarise themselves with. Don't look too much into it, they'll probably also take several liberties with the source material, though it's gonna be pretty long considering they've split it up into two sepparate movies.
