First of all you barely even touched on the combat system in your post as it was mainly about stat allocation and damage calculation mathematics, what you were describing is basically just another game where you pick attacks from a list, though it happens to be shaped like a circle. The stuff about how often you regenerate combat resources, elemental rock/paper/scissors and party swapping are arguably more relevant than how your stats are allocated, but what you do with your points where you level up is not the combat system by any means. It's really not a particularly new system at all, and I could use almost the same code to build one as I would to build any other menu battler except I'd have to dick around in the graphics code to fit it into a circle. Maybe I've just been taught to split these things into their component parts as part of my education on how to make them and you haven't? I don't know. But I wouldn't count anything to do with how character statistics are handled as part of a combat system as they are just passed in from outside and then algorithms are applied to get the result you want. Whether or not a stat effects how much damage you do or not is not something I would consider relevant to the combat system and even if it was I don't think you could count the idea of putting points into increasing fire damage a new mechanic by any stretch of the imagination in the first place. Even the elemental affinity of an attack is arguably part of this category but I'll keep it out just for you, it at least has a greater impact than your personal statistics on the battle. Secondly:
"-X button is for melee attacks, pressing it in well-timed succession will result in multiple hits" is not really consider something stolen from Mario and Luigi as for the most part their action effects only provided additional damage (you could argue that jumping was two attacks and each game contained at least one single move that did something along these lines but I don't consider two attacks the same as multiple attacks or a single move to be defining of the battle system if, as this case implies, multiple hits are the norm rather than a rare case). The first line says that many elements are borrowed from Mario and Luigi which is obviously true but as the description of the combat system is as bare bones as this and less in-depth than what you wrote in five minutes (even though it mostly wasn't about the combat system) I think it's rather too early to say it's as good as copy and pasting. Thirdly: That still didn't answer my question I still don't understand how you could read "RPG" and then be confused when it had a turn based menu-driven combat system with timed attacks I'll clear my point up even further because we've been going on tangents for ages now I am not arguing that all RPGs are unoriginal or that this game is not unoriginal I fully expect it to be unoriginal, and did ever since I saw "tv show tie in" and "RPG" in the title The only thing I have ever been confused about is how you did not see "tv show tie in" and "RPG" in the title and immediately think the same, it wasn't worth this much debate Edited by Jacquerel, Dec 4 2011, 06:14 AM.

But I I never said I was confu- No, you know what, I'll kindly shut the fuck up, because apparently you know far more about this than any mortal being. The last time I played a game of logical leapfrog with you, an entire message board descended into a spiral of damnation and became a charred corpse in the end. We may as well just be arguing over whether Christianity is the one true religion or not. |

Hey, dude, not cool Polter, you're not supposed to take credit for other people's work, and we all know Mormons are the ones who get into Heaven. Except for Kenny that one time. >=( (See, it's still South Park related!) Um, I kinda lost what we were talking about in the walls of text. Combat systems like Mario & Luigi/Paper Mario? Cool I guess. As long as it's done in the spirit of the show. |

Hey that was actually a fun game... if they toned down the fog and had a joystick for it. I really liked Chef's love shack though. Better than Mario Party. Also http://kotaku.com/5864975/so-the-south-park-game-actually-sounds-pretty-great I'm pretty sure this player is retarded, and the eyes look fucked up for some reason. I remember it being bland and mundane. The music was crap, the controls were attrocious, maps were huge and lacked anything to do or even look out aside from snow and blocks for buildings. Also, the entire game was built around the premise of one episode, as I recall, which just ran off for however long the game lasted (which wasn't much). Would've been better as a flash game or something, not a full blown console release. We had the game for less than a day, then promptly returned it and replaced it with something better. |

![]() ![]() Yes, those are ingame screenies. If I didn't know better I'd have thought these were stills taken straight from the show, so it's nice to see they've at least got the artsyle down perfectly. |

I know the argument's over but I just read trough the whole thing and I wanna throw my hat in here. So what if it turns out to be a total rip off of the Paper Mario fight mechanics? Last time I checked, those are still pretty stellar (I prefer the platforming hybrid from Super PM, but what can ya do?). What matters is the atmosphere, the story, and the structure of the game. Last time I checked, South Park is not exactly the kind of game that Nintendo would market with Mario's face. Doom and Wolfenstine had the exact same mechanics. That doesn't make them the same game. Also, the screenshots get me hopeful for this. |
