South Park RPG; Don't know if want

No, that's not a typo - Matt and Trey are overseeing development of a South Park RPG due out sometime in 2012. Ordinarily this would not interest me in the slightest, but as it turns out, the game is being developed by fucking Obsidian, the same guys behind Fallout: New Vegas. WHAT.

Trey Parker and Matt Stone have never been shy about their love of gaming. From Randy Marsh playing Guitar Hero in his underpants to the legendary "Make Love, Not Warcraft" episode, the comic duo have demonstrated an obvious familiarity with the medium. Now that they've conquered television, film, and Broadway, the next target on their hit list is the gaming industry.

Thanks to a collaboration with THQ and Obsidian, Parker and Stone are writing the script, performing the dialogue, and overseeing the development of South Park: The Game. Unlike the cash-in Acclaim titles from over a decade ago, this ambitious project is a full-scale RPG for the Xbox 360, Playstation 3, and PC. As the new kid in South Park, it'll be up to you to make friends and defend the town from a wide range of threats. Be sure to check out our January issue for all the details, as well as an interview with Parker and Stone themselves.
I'll still need to see screenies of this shit before deciding I want it, but for now I'm cautiously optimistic.

Matt and Trey should learn what video games actually are before trying to make one.

What kind of RPG exactly are they aiming for? South Park isn't the kind of franchise that can be developed into just any game, we've already seen a horrendous FPS and a mediocre trivia game, I'm not exactly sure how it would work as an RPG.

It's only the cold wind I feel
It's me that I spite, as I stand up and fight
The only thing I know for real
There will be bloodshed!

There's just... nothing to work with here.

You'd have more luck with something like a hero-based RTS, kinda like Dawn of War 2's story modes did.

They play a lot of games. If you watched the "6 days in the making" documentary, he mentions how he sees the ads for new episodes every time he goes on his Xbox.
I think they can pull of something interesting if they really wanted to. I haven't really seen them fail at anything before.

Um, I think they know already?

It just seems to me that they're not sure what genre would particularly suit a South Park game, but I'm pretty sure they could actually make one.

I can see this working as an RPG. It's likely going to be a self-insertion into the South Park world where you go through stuff that may have happened in the series canon, or completely new stuff based on it. I mean, WoW is successful and is a video game, and it pretty much does the same thing, right?

I don't see how this could fail in concept. However, Obsidian flagged up for me... They've been riding on coat tails so far (read: sequels and co-development). I'd like to see what they can do on their own.

I'll be keeping an eye on this game. Should be nice to see what they can make out of this.

Wait, FPS? Surely you don't mean that one batch of halfassed Activision tie-ins that were made way back in the freakin' N64 era? Come on man, you can do better than that.

Obsidian are actually collaborating with THQ with this title according to the link in the OP, if that means anything.

Come to think of it, wasn't THQ one of the guys that worked on Saints 2? Two devs who both worked on 3D sandbox games? That might be a bit of foreshadowing as to what to expect out of this.

Hang on... I need to eye this one up closer to see if THQ are co-developing or just publishing.

... Ok, yeah, there's like three groups working on this game: THQ, Obsidian and South Park Digital Studios. While I am disappoint, I also feel that this will make sure the game is good: THQ does have the creators of Saints Row under 'em, SPDS will serve to make sure the game keeps the spirit of the show, and... um... Obsidian will make a passable derivative work? I dunno...

Combat

-Many elements of the combat system are like Paper Mario and the Mario & Luigi games.

-If player initiates combat they will attack first and vice versa.

-X button is for melee attacks, pressing it in well-timed succession will result in multiple hits.

-Timed inputs occur for defense as well for reduced damage.

-Obsidian doesn't want the player to have to sit and watch animations play out; they're incorporating dynamic camera angels at certain times, such as a Ro Sham Bo attack that stuns an enemy.

RPG

-Enemy encounters are visible on the map.

-Soda are health potions and Tweak's coffee is a haste item.

-There are melee and ranged weapons, as well as a lightning powered Okama Gameshpere that is a magic item.

-There is a Final Fantasy Materia like system in the game to augment weapons with various abilities like fire, poison, and electricity.

-There is a Summon System but they are not able to talk about it.

Interested yet?

So, basically...they're taking all of their combat from other games?

That sounds just about as creative as the rest of the franchise.

I suppose, but grabbing directly from other people just sounds like a cop-out. I guess I'd have to see actual evidence to see just how close it resembles other games.
