This is silly.

With all due respect Psych, your argument might have had merit if Microsoft actually made money off the 360 itself. But the fact of the matter is, they don't make a profit off hardware. In fact, the price they sell it for doesn't actually break even with the manufacturing costs. This is based on a sales scheme where the profit margins are decided by software sales, not hardware, so to imply they're deliberately making defective consoles just to make people buy more of them is cartoon supervillain levels of stupidity, because they actually lose money from every 360 they sell.

I won't argue that the 360 has gone through some pretty fucking silly design decisions as far as longetivity is concerned, but there is literally no basis for them to do so deliberately - on top of the bad publicity it's given them, they still make a loss on replacing borked 360s when the Red Ring hits. And that's assuming it happens after the warranty expires.

You want someone to blame for taking money for stupid shit, look at Valve and their treasure chests of TF2. Now THOSE are deliberate ripoffs, albeit no less stupid than buying massive amounts of lottery tickets.

Since BL stole my thunder for the losing money bit, what other motive does Microsoft for "ripping off customers?" Shits and giggles? Don't make me laugh. So, yes, very stupid...and PARANOID!!

I like it when people use the word "gay" in any context other than a homosexual one - it only proves that they have the maturity of a five year old, as if their obsession with shooters didn't already do a good job of pointing that out. It's also pretty amusing that he pointed out Skyrim considering the fact that, y'know, it's set in the bloody medival era and doesn't even have muskets, let alone generic modern firearms.

But just for fun, let's play around with his logic a bit.

game - gun = gay
game + gun = -gay
game + gun + Arem = ???

Didn't they compensate to gamers for this? My memory is fuzzy on the whole incident back then.

They extended the RRoD and E-74 error code warranties from one year to three years, and if I recall correctly, all dead 360s that died from those causes before the warranty extension also got free treatment.

I never insinuated that they were deliberately sabotaging the consoles to make more hardware sales, just that they were cheap bastards who have designed a defective and faulty console and have yet to do anything about it. Plus it's more than likely that they're not even replacing defective consoles, they're merely refurbishing them. Microsoft isn't making money off the actual console, but the console is necessary to move software sales, so they're keeping it in continuous play on the market without having to increase the costs by actually fixing the problem. On that note, they get more than enough money off of Live subscriptions to make up for any potential losses they may have through hardware, so it more than breaks even in the long run, methinks.

I said before; it was defective silicon initially. The silicon that was mined that they used earlier was not smelted properly and was vulnerable to melting. THAT'S what caused the flaw initially. The same silicon also caused motherboard meltdowns in computer companies like Toshiba and Acer. They tried to scrub it as soon as they found it, but god knows how much of that silicon still exists in the products today.

60 bucks a year from a million plus gamers is hardly enough to cover malfunctions, and it shows how much you know about budgeting. Often, the budgets are closed off, and so proceeds from Xbox Live are reserved for server maintenance and security upgrades. Malfunctions take from the hardware budgets. Until the budgets are reorganized, you won't see that money.

Like I said, less money is spent on malfunctions anyway, considering the returned consoles are either refurbished or older models in storage and are as equally likely of breakdown as they were before they were sent off. Otherwise, refer to one of the links I posted earlier, it gives a good play by play of how it all works. Also, a million plus? According to Microsoft, 57.6 million units have been sold as of September 30, 2011 and even if we take into consideration that not 100% of that number pays for Live (which is doubtful since the console focuses so much on online play and Live is practically mandatory), that's still a pretty large number. It's $60 now, it'll be $70 next year and $80 the year after that, the numbers add up, especially if consoles are still being sold today.

Defective silicon might be one of the issues, but there were plenty of problems with the system's hardware pointed out in both the links I posted earlier.

It took 5 years for the price to increase, and now you're saying it will take only one the next? Like I said to Phantom, stop it with baseless accusations. AND in 6 years, the number of 360s sold averages not even 10 million a year. Most of the ones sold coincide with a new version launch. As for the numbers, I was accounting for numerous reasons.

Out of 57.6 million units, who knows how many have been sold off to GameStop or what else?
And of the ones that remain, how many have an internet connection?
AND of THOSE, how many are paying for Gold?
I estimated that the number is between 1 and 10 million as a result.

I also love how you completely ignored my statement on inclosed budgets.

And I have read those links, and I felt the urge to count how many times the word "inconsistent" appears. Out of all the lawsuits filed against Microsoft for mishandling of the product, there was not one gross negligence case that even formulated. Meaning, it is highly doubtful that anything is consistent.

We already know the 360 is vulnerable to hardware problems, as is any sophisticated piece of hardware. We've known that for years. Showing us those links, Psycho, is purely redundant. Stuff we already know. I saw that link YEARS ago!

[the next part refers to your use of the applause.gif.]

And please, you're applauding bad behavior? I seem to remember Psycho that we suspended people for using that tone on us back at SoaH. There is a level of professionalism that is to be expected when dealing with a business. If you don't want to act properly civil, then no company should have to deal with you. What are you, a beast giving into its passions every time it gets angry? No matter how right you are, that doesn't merit acting unprofessionally. I'm very disappointed in you, Psycho. I work at Walmart as a cart pusher, and when a customer goes bananas on something, no matter how right he or she is, I have no desire to deal with him or her.

Right to refuse service.

EDIT: And to be frank, I don't wish to continue yet another topic on the RRoD. I've talked about it 6 times online already, and countless other times offline. Frankly, I'm fucking tired of it.

If you don't want to "argue" (I'm pretty sure we're discussing this in a civilised manner, so I don't see what the problem is =/), then you're not obligated to. I don't see why you have to take this so personally and white knight Microsoft for issues they're responsible for, whether it's intentional or not. A smart hardware developer would recall a product when there's a factory defect and replace defective models with working ones FOR FREE.

Yes, I am saying the price'll increase next year, isn't that what Microsoft said? That the price of Live will increase by $10 every year to make up for supposed server maintenance and security upgrades? I didn't ignore your statement about inclosed budgets, I was merely expanding upon it with that.

What tone was Hammy using exactly, that he wasn't entitled to? The letter he sent was more formal than not and only contained one instance of profanity that the rep felt the need to object to, aside from replying a week late. After paying for a defective product three times, I think he has a right to complain to customer service, since he is a customer and they should be providing him with a quality service...that he payed for...three times. I don't know why you're okay with paying for a succession of 360's everytime they break down, but people shouldn't have to take that sitting down. So he was a bit forward with the way he voiced himself, is that so wrong? There's a clear cut difference between a hysterical douchebag who's yelling and screaming incoherently about some random shit and an upset customer who is clearly voicing his disdain with a product.

In short, I wasn't applauding "bad behaviour", I was applauding how a person used his right to stand up for himself, something a large majority of the jaded community hasn't done. You have as much right to refuse service as Hammy does to demand it as compensation.

See, that is exactly why I do not use GIFs to say what I want to say; there's ALWAYS a misunderstanding, but thanks for clearing it up.
