No, I'm fucking serious. Guess what happened during the midst and direct aftermath? Social networks. "OH SHIT, I'M IN THE MIDDLE OF AN EARTHQUAKE. BETTER POST THIS TO *insert social network here*." Not exactly what I was expecting when checking Facebook or some shit a few minutes ago. It's fucking everywhere. Edited by Luffy Foxtrot, Aug 23 2011, 09:54 PM.

Wow, that's pretty wild. I've never personally heard of earthquakes in Virginia, so if they aren't regular then I wouldn't be surprised if people there were shocked. |

Yeah, I JUST looked at Facebook and everyone was talking about an Earthquake...everyone on the East Coast, at any rate. A 5.9, that sounds pretty serious, but I'm no expert or anything. At least everyone seems okay though. EDIT: Seemed to have hit the hardest in the Maryland/Virginia/DC area. |

I'm on the West Coast so my Facebook feeds are pretty clear, but on my college mailinglist there's a massive earthquake thread accumulating xD |

From what I have gathered, it was a 5.8 magnitude earthquake, and that the epicenter was so close to the surface, the seismic waves traveled really fast and far. It was even felt by reporters off the coast of Massachusetts. Crazy shit... Oddly, a co-worker and I were actually discussing earthquakes at the time (he's autistic and loves to ask questions on anything, even 2012 and natural disasters). On break, I heard about the quake. Scary shit... EDIT: Apparently, another one of similar intensity happened at the Colorado/New Mexico border, along with several aftershocks. Freaky... Edited by Arem, Aug 23 2011, 11:44 PM.

I thought my DVD drive was flipping its shit and rocking my computer, so I ejected the disc. That's my exciting earthquake story. It really wasn't too bad, but I guess earthquakes have to be relatively huge before you can even feel them? I was too busy getting back The Lord of the Rings to post on facebook :V Edited by YCobb, Aug 23 2011, 11:55 PM.

Oh, you'll feel 5-magnitude earthquakes no problem. 6-magnitude earthquakes can cause some really bad damage, like it did in Los Angeles back in '94. |

Can we get over this? It's an earthquake. They literally happen all the time. It was a yearly occurrence for just where I lived alone. It's like people think earthquakes only happen by the ocean and that tornadoes are only in the midwest. Hint: They're not. We constantly got hurricanes in New England, never mind the rest of the obscene weather. |

Why should people get over this? True, this specific earthquake wasn't serious, but it could have been and people discussing it only serves to spread the awareness of earthquakes, helping people be more prepared in case one happens. What exactly is the benefit of being desensitised to nature's wrath when it actually IS a pretty big deal? |

Because sensationalizing something when it shouldn't be is pretty much America. It doesn't matter if what's on the television is pertinent, true, or made up, people will react as if it's the second coming when they should be acting sensible. Telling people what a 5.8 means to them might be a good start, as well as "This didn't cause any major damage, and this shouldn't be taken as a sign of alarm. If something serious does happen, however..." But no, let's freak out about a common geological phenomenon. |

First of all, we're not acting like it's 2012. We're discussing sensibly, and hoping to see how we can help our friends here who live in affected regions like this. Would you rather us not post it, and be apathetic to our colleagues in said region? 5.8 is actually a strong earthquake. You don't have to go far up the Richter Scale from there to get a bad earthquake. The one that shook up Los Angeles in '94 was a 6.7, and the one in San Francisco at the '89 World Series was a 6.9. Just one level up can mean catastrophe. Anything higher then 7.0 is a fucking nightmare, and those previous examples are horrifying enough. Many people misinterpret the Richter Scale because they believe the rating scale is like the Fujita scale (tornado intensity) or the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Wind Scale (hurricane intensity), where one level up is nothing exponential, and is categorized by wind speed + damage. The Richter Scale isn't like that at all. In fact, going up one whole number on the Richter Scale means the earthquake gains 10x more power as it erupts, and releases 30x more energy. Washington is lucky that it didn't go any higher then it was rated, because even so much as 0.1 difference is highly impacting. In essence, going from one whole number to the next is the difference between 50 and 500. Being desensitized is actually a bad thing. When disaster strikes, you more than likely won't react to warnings, and end up being killed in the disaster. Tornadoes are common in the US, but it's people's callous reactions that make them devastating. Already, over 500 people had been killed this record-setting year because of tornadoes. Last time we had a year like that was before we knew better about tornado preparedness and safety. If people aren't aware, lives are lost. When people grow desenstized, lives are lost. Better to be aware then numb to the fact. Not to be rude, but I seriously question the wisdom or intelligence of any being who blows off severe natural phenomena as "no big deal." There are stupid people, and there are fools. Tell me, which is worse? Edited by Arem, Aug 24 2011, 03:11 AM.

I'm surprised there weren't that many damages considering how strong it was. |
