This is pretty screwed up

You know what the worst part of all this is?

The small groups of youths _ most with their heads and faces covered _ used SMS messages, instant messaging on BlackBerry cell phones and social media such as Twitter to coordinate their attacks and outwit the police.

Social networking is playing a part in making this worse. There are real problems going on all over the world and people are too busy WRECKING an entire city and capitalising off of it. This is fucking sad.

The social networking element was also used to start the Egyptian revolution, the only difference is, those dudes were fighting for freedom (while confined in one place too), while these idiots are fighting for their rights to take ice cream cones for free.

Obligatory video game blaming

Surprisingly, the Sun is not pointing the finger at games...this time...

You know, I miss the days when newspapers and media outlets actually had real journalists who weren't overly biased and didn't have some kind of hidden agenda at the behest of their editors, who are probably being payed off by some unscrupulously corrupt politicians to say shit that just isn't true. Just sayin'.

...dude, I don't think any of us are old enough to remember those days. Media has always had some sort of spin since at least Thomas Jefferson's time... :P

Mmm, my cousin's house is 20 min away from the major riots. She's back in the motherland right now, but she's really scared for her friends still there. Ughghhhalskjlwe;o

Well, I meant more in reference to a time when it wasn't so freakin' blatant. It's gotten to the point where EVERYONE in the media is evil.

Also, I pray that any of our UK residents here (I think it's just MC and Hedj at the moment) are safe.

Nah, I'm fairly close to London but it's mostly spreading North and West as opposed to South and East where I am, plus the shops are a fair distance away from my house and there's no point rioting in a residential area.
I do know a few other people who are closer but they've told me they're alright too so that's a relief.

One main problem here is that it's British holiday time (we start a fair bit later than America and some other places I believe) so not only are a bunch of kids out of college and on the street, it turns out that several important cabinet members and the Mayor of London were also all on holiday at the same time and have only actually managed to return today, so the first actual crisis meeting about the situation isn't going to happen until tommorow morning!
I can't help but think that the media is blowing this up into a bigger crisis than it actually is simply because there's not a whole lot else happening, but it still must be pretty nasty for all those involved. Got to feel for the innocent shopkeepers who are being looted, what does that have to do with police brutality at all? That was apparently what triggered the riots in the first place!
I honestly have to agree with the people in that article who said "this is just an excuse for young people to get out and loot shops", they're clearly not going to prove anything by doing this and it's just a pointless waste of time, money and people.

I don't think it's being blown up, a lot of my friends have reported that they know people who have had family members die during the riots. Also:

EDIT: Here's more:

I'm glad there were at least some people who were brave enough to stand up to this madness.
