I'd wait until we see some animated assets before getting excited about it, though. It's not really disputed that Voxels (well okay these aren't actually Voxels, but the idea is very much the same) can render static environments pretty damn well, but from what I can remember when it comes to animation they're notoriously tedious, time consuming and a lot more demanding of processor power.

What's also worth noting is that Voxels or no, this is an absolutely retarded amount of data to be accessed at any one time, which needs to be accessed quite quickly in order to be feasible from any gameplay standpoint. If they have some magic explanation for that beyond "our rig has a trillion fucking gigabytes of RAM", then sure, I've love to hear it, but for now a few details about this leaves me skeptical, if not optimistically so.

The next GTA game could very well take place across the entire country as opposed to one city or part of one state.
No. No, no, no, no. For fuck's sake, NO. The entire problem with sandboxes these days is that they make us to trudge through that kind of terrain for long periods of time and somehow expect us to find any part of it memorable at all. I can personally guarantee you that not a single developer in the coming history of videogaming will ever dedicate that kind of love and persistence towards a territory so vast, and the last thing we need is for people to amplify problems inherent to the genre like this. After the likes of Just Cause and Far Cry 2 I'm amazed anyone even considers this a selling point anymore.

I don't see why you're complaining considering you plug so much time and effort into Minecraft, of all things. :P

The difference here being that Minecraft doesn't expect anyone to venture to the far corners of the world like virtually every other sandbox game I can think of. That's not to say the option isn't there for people who like wandering through incredibly generic environments all day, but considering the entire point of the game is more to create an environment rather than explore it makes it kinda hard to put Minecraft in the same light as other sandboxes, which almost never had any features equally as redeeming.

Now if we were to put the technology towards, oh say, building a world up Sim-City style complete with fully accessible buildings and such, then invite other players to blow the fuck out of it Red Faction style from a first-person, ordinary human being's perspective? That kind of thing would interest me, because even regardless of the size people would at least be able to express some kind of attachment and familiarity to the environments in question. Not to mention it's generally a bit of a cocktease to throw these buildings into games all the time without being given any purpose other than a generic urban blob, and to go further than that on a large scale would be a pretty adaquete test of just how far you can push tech like this gameplay-wise.

That's kinda what I was going for; I wasn't really trying to convey the scale, but the amount of potential detail and interractivity that would go along with it. You'd have fully detailed buildings occupied by a variety of cool stuff that would be enterable AND destructible. Now imagine large expansive environments FULL of a diverse variety of that. Eh? EH?

I don't know. One of my complaints with Oblivion was that it was far too big. Having this ability to make things bigger kind of scares me away.

I like it when people use the word "gay" in any context other than a homosexual one - it only proves that they have the maturity of a five year old, as if their obsession with shooters didn't already do a good job of pointing that out. It's also pretty amusing that he pointed out Skyrim considering the fact that, y'know, it's set in the bloody medival era and doesn't even have muskets, let alone generic modern firearms.

But just for fun, let's play around with his logic a bit.

game - gun = gay
game + gun = -gay
game + gun + Arem = ???

Don't think of it as vast, empty expanses of fields and trees, think of it as big cities you'd want to explore the shit out of.

If it's harder to do animation with, I wonder if they could use both this and polygons at once.

One of my complaints about Oblivion was that it was too small, and with an hour's worth of searching you could find just about everything you wanted to in a region of the overworld. Too few towns, and except for a few key spots in the wilderness, was extremely sparse.

Being able to travel and find random shit just makes me all giddy.

Skyrim is supposed to be on a better engine, so I'm guessing a lot of the problems Oblivion had will probably not be transferred over. Though some of the animation was a little off in the trailer...

The main problem with this atom shit, besides the fact that it'd likely require new hardware for consoles at very least, is that there's alot of USELESS detail.

That's right, useless. unless your game takes place in an ant's scale, grains of dirt and sand are completely useless to render out, and a waste of development time. Graphics do not make games better, AESTHETICS do.

The tech is nifty and all, but we have enough developers trying to market graphics instead of gameplay as it is.

This MIGHT see more use in cgi movies instead, and at best to lower the amount of time it takes to render scenes on their renderfarms.

Well, the way they're selling it is a scam, but the technology is real and perhaps eventually, it will be able to do what they imply it does.

...I think we should give it a chance before blindly kicking it in the balls without full knowledge of what it can do, but that's just me I guess.

So basically, everyone thought this was fake because they all assumed it was that voxel stuff but it's something completely different, amirite?
