Honestly I think the latest Jimquisition says it best. Devs keep trying to compete with other devs in areas that have already been thoroughly dominated and milked for all its worth by the ones that spawned the fucking fad in the first place, and it's so retarded it's almost sickening. They could actually be making a lot of money right now if they found a new niche and stuck with it instead of waging pointless ego wars like the CoD/Battlefield one, but as far as I can see all their thought processes consist of is "Oh hey, these guys are making money. Maybe we can make money by doing the exact same thing they're doing".

When was the last time that ever worked, anyway? I'm really struggling to think of a single example off the top of my head here.

I dunno, CoD still prints money for sure.

Risky = Maybe not printing as much money.

For the suits in charge, that's unacceptable. They want that Kotick Kash.

Well yeah, that's the point. CoD was the franchise that took the modern shooter niche in the first place, and that kind of thing is first-come-first-serve for the most part. Even if you end up making a game that's objectively better than it, by this point it's pretty much gotten impossible to topple the marketing and public image it's built up over the years. I still hate to say it, but Activision still hold's the lion's share in that market, and it really says something that EA has to spend ludicrous amounts of money to keep up when Activision can essentially just pump out shovelware and still keep its name intact.

It's pretty much the exact same thing that happens with Nintendo's hardware, frankly - they see a niche nobody's taken yet and make a cunt-ton of money off it (even if, with the exception of the Wii, they arguably don't even sell as much as their competitors), whilst everyone else, instead of following their example and finding an untapped demograph of their own, just tries to steal Ninty's.

Because they didn't install a new base for their copycat, just tried to shoehorn it onto their old systems.

That's the initial problem; the other two didn't think the entire thing through and just decided that "hey, this worked for Ninty, so we should just plop it into our currently existing technology without integrating it fully and making a serious attempt at games that fully utilise it". Releasing an HD collection of PS2 games with some tacked on Move minigames is not the solution, and neither is a car racing game where you have to crotch thrust to use the turbo.

Oh hey, speaking of Kinect.

Quote:

A New Hampshire man who thought he had a decent ball toss says he lost his life savings—or about $2,600—playing a carnival game he claims was rigged.

Henry Gribbohm told WBZ-TV that he was attempting to win an Xbox Kinect at the Manchester carnival when things went awry.

The 30-year-old from Epsom, N.H., was playing a game called Tubs of Fun in which contestants toss balls into a tub, but the balls kept popping out.

“It’s not possible that it wasn’t rigged,” Gribbohm said. “You just get caught up in the whole ‘I’ve got to win my money back.’”

Gribbohm lost $300, WBZ-TV reports, "went home to get $2,300 more and soon lost all of that as well."

Manchester police are investigating the incident, and New Hampshire-based Fiesta Shows, which produces the traveling carnival, is pulling Tubs of Fun for the time being.

Gribbohm, who managed to win a stuffed banana with dreadlocks before dropping $2,600, says he's considering a lawsuit.

“For once in my life I happened to become that sucker,” Gribbohm said.
What a fucking moron. I don't know what's worse, the fact that he wasted the whole 300 bucks on his person, went back home to take out his entire life savings to lose that as well, or that the actual kinect costs about 100 bucks and it would have been easier just to buy one.

I like it when people use the word "gay" in any context other than a homosexual one - it only proves that they have the maturity of a five year old, as if their obsession with shooters didn't already do a good job of pointing that out. It's also pretty amusing that he pointed out Skyrim considering the fact that, y'know, it's set in the bloody medival era and doesn't even have muskets, let alone generic modern firearms.

But just for fun, let's play around with his logic a bit.

game - gun = gay
game + gun = -gay
game + gun + Arem = ???

A spiritual sequel to Eternal Darkness is to be announced for Steam and WiiU on Monday. It will be crowd-funded and episodic.

Before you get excited, this is being made without the supervision of Nintendo by former members of Silicon Knights, who arguably never made a single good game since. I want to get my hopes up for this, but with Denis Dyack on board I can't see this ending well.

Gonna take this with some cautious optimism. Dyack might be a bit of a douche, but if it wasn't for him we wouldn't have Blood Omen or Eternal Darkness. For every bad game Silicon Knights made, there was a decent amount of good to go with it.

Kojima cancels Zone of the Enders 3, citing poor critical and framerate performance of the HD collection of the first two games. He stresses that the franchise isn't dead though, and is calling for input from the fans to decide whether a new game is still wanted and which way to go about it.

Oh please, 10 bucks says he bailed on it because he was too busy swimming in the money that continuously comes from milking Metal Gear and was afraid he would actually have to put some effort into actually creating an intelligent, new game from a whole other franchise. What the fuck does framerate issues from an upscaled collection of the first two games have anything to do with development of a BRAND NEW third game on a completely different console?

Well, considering the last one was Rising...
You mean the only good game the series has had for the past decade? The one he couldn't be bothered handling, so he had to hand it over to a more competent studio?

Honestly, if Kojima stopped pussyfooting with "spinoffs" of Big Boss, with how every game seems like it's going to be about him making babies and ending with "BUT WAIT, THERE'S MORE", which leads into the next pile of horseshit that the fans will eat up because they're expecting closure...we'd get better games from him. Guy's a brilliant man, but he keeps wasting his talents away on stuff nobody with more than half a brain wants. Real fans want ports or remakes of his older works, releases of games we never got in the West and they also want new IPs with brilliant ideas. Metal Gear is the decomposed horse sitting in the backyard that keeps shitting out half baked games every few years that are less about "tactical espionage action" and more about how much military jargon and political bureaucracy they can cram into a Japanese soap opera.

It's become so blatant that Konami has taken a backseat to Kojima Productions and has not made anything relevant outside of their yearly instalments of Winning Eleven/Pro Evolution Soccer in a very, very long time. I was seriously looking forward to ZOE's return because it would've restored some of my faith in Kojima, but this flimsy excuse about framerate issues in ports of older games just confirms my feelings that he's just another example of what Inafune was talking about regarding the Japanese gaming industry.
