I won't be touching it at all if it turns out to not have a physical media option or that stupid pre-owned lock-out thing. I might be tempted if those aren't there and the console is more than just a blatant "STEAL ALL OF NINTENDO'S SHIT HERPADERPDERP" thing.

And then of course, you'll have to factor in the launch price, which will be ridiculously expensive, given the PS3's and Vita's respective launches. Especially with what BL said about the whatever guys at Sony who insist on having the latest and greatest tech in it and won't accept otherwise.

Not to mention, I seriously doubt this will lift them over their tremendous amount of debt. Definitely not interested in a console that might get canned two years later.

I like it when people use the word "gay" in any context other than a homosexual one - it only proves that they have the maturity of a five year old, as if their obsession with shooters didn't already do a good job of pointing that out. It's also pretty amusing that he pointed out Skyrim considering the fact that, y'know, it's set in the bloody medival era and doesn't even have muskets, let alone generic modern firearms.

But just for fun, let's play around with his logic a bit.

game - gun = gay
game + gun = -gay
game + gun + Arem = ???

I think it will be just fine. They probably learned from previous mistakes that they shouldn't charge out the ass for their hardware (which thanks to alternate materials they can sell much cheaper now). Sony's been super awesome with PS1, 2, and yes 3... so I have no doubt what they offer will be great. To me they're like my 2nd Sega...even if they were kinda responsible for their downfall...

In all honesty, if they do managed to get the damn thing out the door, I expect this to happen. Sony would be better off dropping their gaming division to make up for losses, since it's one of their biggest money sinks anyway. Get a clear head and think before jumping back in the game. There's no shame in dropping out of the race until you're better prepared for it, especially considering there is absolutely no point for both, Sony and Microsoft to release a console anytime soon considering there is no considerably relevant hardware upgrade they can shove down the market's throat.

No, a new control gimmick that will obviously be a blatant ripoff of the Wii U does not qualify. Imitation may be the sincerest form of flattery, but neither Kinect nor Move won any hearts over considering they were both half assed attempts at emulating the Wii and games either had to be tailor made for the peripherals to be relevant (which did not amount to more than shovelware) or had half assed minigames tacked on just to make them seem relevant (I'm looking at you Sly Cooper Collection).

The industry needs to start learning that, just because there is a gimmick available, does not mean you need to forcefully add compatibility for it into your games. This is precisely why third party devs are still not comprehending how to port games onto the Wii U; instead of just porting the game normally, they feel the need to force some bullshit gimmick into the game just to make the gamepad more relevant. I don't think anything more than maybe easy inventory access, a map, or transfering the entire HUD onto the gamepad is necessary. This is precisely why we're not getting Tomb Raider on the Wii U, because devs believe it's not worth releasing unless there's some bullshit gimmick they can add to it.

But see, that's the catch 22. A control quirk has to come standard with its console, no exceptions about it - otherwise it goes unused altogether by its consumers and third parties, turning it into a complete waste of money as opposed to an unwelcome addition to certain games because certain devs just don't have a clue. You might recall this is exactly what got THQ in the shit to begin with - they made tons of uDraw tablets for HD consoles and only maybe three games supported it. The best you can really do is to lead by example with your first parties - make games designed with the tablet in mind, make a few designed with traditional controllers but still benefit from it somehow (ZombiU and Aliens being the shining examples so far), and the supporting parties will play follow the leader and build off that. Ironically enough this was exactly why the Wii ended up with so fucking many party games because Ninty quite shamelessly insisted on making their own.

Also, I'm pretty sure the gaming division is one of Sony's only profitable divisions at the time being, as opposed to everything else (especially their TV department). If anything, the key problem Sony has to be careful of is that the PS3 literally took years to start making a profit on, perhaps even over half of its own lifespan so far. With most of Sony bleeding money right now they can't afford to wait that long to earn it back. Either way, though, I make no exaggerations here when I say this is the move that could literally make or break Sony now - if they fuck this up, they're probably not coming back.

You guys gotta think more positive.

Just realized something... Rumor of next Sonic game next month, Sony's announcement next month... if we're lucky, we might see the next gen of Sonic.

You can sell your personal legally-obtained license to the software to another person.
It's not quite as simple as that, though. You kinda have to consider why the used game market exists - essentially because the games come cheaper than firsthand sales. Then you have to consider why secondhand sales are cheaper to begin with - something I can't claim to know the exact reason for to be honest, but one could say a number of factors can potentially devalue the hard copy of the game, such as the condition of the box, boxart, documentation and the disc itself, or whether any but the lattermost are even there anymore. Obviously these aren't even factors in a digital download, as data can't be devalued in any manner besides its source (and I get the feeling services like Steam would get in a bit of shit if it ever came down to the files on their servers spontaneously corrupting like that), so I really can't see them selling at any less than the existing retail price. And by that point it completely defeats the point of a digital used gaming market because it'd be less of a hassle just to buy a game and download it on your own, unless a digital service actively wants to screw itself out of due sales for no good reason.

I get that they're doing this for principles a bit beyond this, but I can't help but feel there's a bit of apples-and-oranges going on with this specific scenario.
I'm sorry to drop in here so late, but I saw that the obvious answer to this discussion never got brought up.

Used video games have to be cheaper than others because someone is trying to sell them. If you bought a game for $60 and then turned around a month later and sold it to someone for $60, it might work out. If you've got all the materials in the case, then it's not much different from buying new.

But companies like Gamestop thrive on used sales. How? By making it possible to turn an even larger profit. They sell used games cheaper because they want customers to buy their games, not the games essentially being sold by manufacturers. Used games are cheaper because the people who profit from them want them to be an appealing option.

((Or the seller could just be friendly. I bought my friend's copy of Pokemon White a while ago - he'd gotten some fun out of it so he'd gotten some money's worth out of it and was cool with giving it to me for $20. Score for both of us. there's a noncorporate case to it as well.))

I totally get that, I wasn't against devs not utilising the tablet at all, but how they feel the need to overdo it in stead of making sensible design choices, especially with regards to ports. Like I said above, just make the inventory or map more accessible through the touch screen or switch the entire HUD over to the touch screen and have a clean screen visible for players on the TV. Give the players the option of having off-TV play on the controller, these are all simple things they could do with ports of games that are on the other two consoles. It takes no work or skill to do this, as opposed to coming up with some half baked idea and delaying ports onto the console because of said ideas.

As for games tailor made for the Wii U, I'm all for them trying to come up with innovative design choices.

Doubtful. It's already been decided that it will be a current-gen Sonic.

Yeah, so they're pretty much planning to use their nukes on us... it's pretty clear with the New York footage from that.
We get it NK... you hate us... keep it up and you'll no longer exist before you can strike.

And nothing of value was gained.

Spoiler: click to toggle

In other news, Sega's teasing for something next Tuesday.

Spoiler: click to toggle
Some are speculating it's Golden Axe, but right now the only likelihood anyone can discern is that it's very unlikely to be Sonic news. Could even be a new IP for all we know.

It's Ristar or Toe Jam and Earl. Maybe even a crossover.
