I love my PS3 so much I haven't even touched my 360 in almost 2 years. They do make great hardware and it's disappointing to know how bad in a position they are in. People these days are spending $599 for freaking ipads with only 32gb, I think if Sony did go and charge a shitload for a newer system, they would still get a lot of buyers as long as it (maybe) out preforms Microsoft, has better features again, and this time gives us backwards compatibility for at least PS3 and PS1 games on a PS4. Can't really expect PS2 compatibility.... but if they pulled that off... oh man that would seal the deal for some people. |

A lot of people are still bitter Sony removed the PS2-backwards compatibility in the first place, even though it was shitty as fuck. |

With Sony having a section on the PlayStation Store for PSone and PS2 "Classics" which they ever so slowly update, there is no chance at all of the next PlayStation console going backwards that far. PS3 compatibility is possible, but doubtful at this point. And even if Sony theoretically could provide BC for PSone and PS2, they certainly wouldn't actually go for it, because that'd just lose them digital sales. And anyway, Arem mentioned software and hardware in regards to BC in the past. That much hardware on top of everything else would probably result in Orbis being nearly DOUBLE the size of the PS3. So yea, not happening. |

Well they already have BC for PS1 on PS3. Who knows, I think if they did it would give people more of a reason to, and those who don't own certain games would buy digitally just for the convenience or even better pricing. Just read this
True. Price is going down, meaning more people will buy this holiday. I think the Vita might've been a bad move though. Edited by Havoc the Tenrec, Nov 3 2012, 10:57 PM.

The Vita is just another example of their obsession with releasing too much hardware that does too much. You know, if Sony didn't have anything else to fall back on, they'd end up the way of Sega. |

Hardware that does a lot isn't what's wrong with it (I see that as a good thing), it's just the timing. If something like it came out a year or two before the 3ds... when there was a pause in new gaming portables coming out, I think it would be doing much better. Portable gaming right now is just way too available on every portable device, like what was said before. Even before it was, but Nintendo is just a more popular brand, and if people have to choose between two they'll go for who has the better IPs and better price most of the time. I think the price of the extra memory cards alone scared people off. |

Right, just like how the Dreamcast, which came out a year or two before the PS2 ended up tanking as a result. The whole concept of getting a break in the market first isn't going to work if you don't have a long term plan for your device and if it doesn't ultimately have some kind of selling point that sets it appart from the competition. Sega was using an outdated media format and had an, overall, weaker console with barely noticeable third party support. This is why the PS2 stomped it the second it was out the door. Also, the issue with pointless hardware is that it unnecessarily raises the cost (among other things) of the device, both for manufacturers and for the buyer. They end up shoving a ton of useless crap (I dare someone to legitimise the second touch screen on the back of the Vita for me) on the damn thing and try to sell it as some kind of multipurpose doohickey, when people just want something that plays some damn good game and has a good library of games to play. The PSP suffered from the same problem; on it's initial release, it was touted as a handheld PS2, with ports/alternatives to the games on the PS2. Yet no one bought it during it's initial release because it had nothing going for it, it was a redundant piece of hardware that only ended up succeeding with niche audiences due to the abundance of JRPGs that were released on it in the end. If it wasn't for companies like NIS and Atlus, the PSP would have tanked completely, and even then, it took them years before they started releasing the good stuff. This is the inherent problem; Sony has no foresight into the gaming industry and continues to try selling it's gaming based products in a gaming market the same way they would with other electronics. This is why their engineers are hardware obsessed, because they fail to realise that the market they are competing in has no need for all the unnecessary hardware. If anything, they should hold back some of their more innovative ideas for future releases when they become more relevant in a market that opens up to said ideas. I don't care if my PS3 plays Blu Rays, or DVDs, or music, or 3D or whatever. I only care that it plays games and has good games to play. This is what's important for the gamer and this is what the company should be focussing on. |

Again, only through the Store. Physical PSone discs don't work, which is what backwards compatibility generally means. |

PS1 discs do indeed work on PS3... just not PS2. They are also sold on PSN, for convenience sake. I don't understand the "more is not better" thing. It's one of the reasons I don't even bother with my 360. It drives sales. There's got to be more reasons why Sony's been tanking. |

It costs too much to make. There's no rocket science behind it, really - the Blu-Ray drive alone already made up most of the PS3's cost, and considering a standalone BluRay could set you back fifteen hundred dollars when they first started out it begs the question of whether even the astonishingly ridiculous launch price of FIVE HUNDRED AND NINETY NINE US DOLLARS was still selling the thing at a loss, much less the comparatively tame prices you can get one for today. It's a great deal from the consumer's point of view, but on the developer's side it's digging them into a massive hole from which I fear they've already passed the point of no return. I'm fairly certain that you're a tad mixed up there, Havoc. The PS2 is fully compatibe with the PSone library, though the slim model is known to a have a few issues. Why would the current PS3 models support PSone games, but not the PS2 library? ...ok, now I'm curious *loads Bugs Bunny & Taz: Time Busters into PS3* ...well, fuck. Guess I'm wrong, after all. That still doesn't make any sense whatsoever. |

I don't believe there's ever "too much of a good thing." imho.
It used to cost that much partly because of the materials alone. They cut component costs by 35% in 2008. I think by now even more... and lesson learned on their end. I'm sure the next big thing wont make that mistake again... in terms of materials used.
Ah ha! See? You can even save games to the PS3's hard drive... which obviously for PS1 games means practically infinite space.... well more space than you'll ever need. Edited by Havoc the Tenrec, Nov 4 2012, 11:06 AM.
