Australia's Minister for Home Affairs and Justice, Jason Clare, has now released the finalised gudelines for the classification of video games. These new guidelines will come into effect starting next year, along wit an R18+ rating, as we all know. However, the iGEA, or Interactive Games and Entertainment Association have rather cautiously accepted the new guidelines and are "waiting" to see how the Classification Board shall further interpret video game content next year. If you wish to skip past IGN's articles, the 13 page document can be downloaded or viewed here. I'll paste the R18+ guidelines below:
I can't help but feel that, under this classification of violence, games like God of War will still be subject to refusal of classification, or continued censorship. Not that I really care about what happens to God of War, but that was the best example I could think of. Maybe Anarchy Reigns may experience some difficulties in getting past classification? I have no idea; political speak like this confuses me somewhat D: |

One of the industry's most prominent jocktards, Cliffy B, has apparently stated that he loves Nintendo and is very interested in what the Wii U has to offer. As much as I hate the guy, Gears was a pretty decent series, all things considered. |

Such a shame that his new super duper game engine apparently won't work on the Wii U, though. [/obvioussarcasm] Though, that aside, I think the current Unreal Engine is too powerful for any of the current consoles (I may be recalling this wrong) and is purely a PC gig for now. |

I'm just gonna post again because otherwise no one will see this. First up, Sony Online Entertainment President, John Smedly believes that, people who aren't gamers shouldn't be working in the games business. Second, Level 5 studios may look towards developing some of their future games within their American Internation branch. And third, with the assistane of former CBS President, Nancy Tellem, Microsoft's Xbox branch is looking towards streaming "original programming" on Xbox LIVE. |

First one's sound advice, second one sounds promising (INAZUMA ELEVEN, INAZUMA ELEVEN) and the third one's...yeah okay, I guess I can see the appeal in that for some people, though "original programming" sounds way too vague. |

In his newest video at The Escapist, Destructoid's Jim Sterling offers his opinions on Microsoft's and Sony's push towards making their respective consoles full-on media entertainment platforms. He also has a suspicion that Nintendo have already "won" the next-gen battle with the Wii U. |

As far as I'm concerned the big N hasn't lost. Stumbled a bit due to being too conservative with the 3DS, but considering XBox360 had the RRoD and both Sony and Microsoft decided to copy the Wii... |

See, here's the thing - there was a period of time where Nintendo trailed in sales compared to the other two (of course, that made little difference to them just by virtue of making a profit from hardware, unlike the other two). What'd they do about that? They appealed to demographs that nobody else was touching with a ten foot pole, and suddenly they had the best-selling home console in history (and second in consoles overall only to the DS, which you could argue succeeded either for much the same reason or because Nintendo already had a literal fucking monopoly on the handheld industry at that stage). It only makes sense that this came as a big fucking wakeup call to Sony and Microsoft and convince them they should be making bids for audiences nobody else will touch, or just follow-the-leader esque "just fucking steal their idea verbatim and swap a few things" mentality that's gone into motion controls, to name one example. The only thing you can fault them on is that their choice of audiences is fucking stupid and redundant. If you're going to try the "universal media player" route then you're practically losing to PCs and TV subscriptions by default. |

I like where this is going, though I remember reading somewhere that Nintendo is trying to buy back the rights to the Banjo franchise, which would be nice. |
