Nintendo makes game development look so easy, says this one dev.

EDIT: Team Ninja wants another crack at Metroid. Seeing as Team Ninja's half of Other M was the good half, I say hell yeah. Just as long as Nintendo gets their shit together and doesn't botch it again, it should be awesome. Seriously, the gameplay is what keeps me going back for more Other M, it's really a lot of fun to play.

I've had my complaints with the gameplay, but more or less, it was really good stuff.

I like it when people use the word "gay" in any context other than a homosexual one - it only proves that they have the maturity of a five year old, as if their obsession with shooters didn't already do a good job of pointing that out. It's also pretty amusing that he pointed out Skyrim considering the fact that, y'know, it's set in the bloody medival era and doesn't even have muskets, let alone generic modern firearms.

But just for fun, let's play around with his logic a bit.

game - gun = gay
game + gun = -gay
game + gun + Arem = ???

I recall that Yoshio Sakamoto was encouraged by Team Ninja in regards to some of the character direction in some interview, so Nintenny ain't the only ones to blame to that regard. (TN also were the ones who wanted that awful psudorealistic look for the characters)

I don't know about pseudo-realism, but I did feel like the graphics were somewhat odd. Samus herself was a pretty glaring example when you compare her to Prime 3.

And I can agree with the gameplay, though I agree with Arem in that there are some issues with the gameplay, but I kinda do think it has potential. Samus hasn't been known for melee, but she can fight just fine in Smash Bros., and we know she can pull off some impressive acrobatics.

I do agree that the characterization could have been handled better. Samus was just... Everything I believed her not to be. She's an intergalactic badass with a kill count few other bounty hunters can get near, and that's if you go past the Metroidverse. She is a battle-hardened badass, not a whiny, approval-seeking, frail waif who exists to fulfil male fantasies.

Adam Malcovich was a huge letdown too, especially after we get that hint of what he's like in Fusion. You'd think he'd be smart enough to have good judgment, but no. Half his decisions are dangerous and idiotic and indicate that he's not as good as we thought. To make matters worse, it seems like the guy is doing this to put Samus on a tight leash and doesn't care about her properly. Seriously. A smart commander would work with the super-powered merc who offered her help, not try to control her. (Adam's decision to restrict Samus' Power Bombs had good grounding, as with the Wave and Plasma beams, and the Screw Attack but little else makes sense.)

Anthony was the only other properly memorable character, and the only good personality in the game. He seems to have something of a 'bro' relationship with Samus, which I didn't mind.

I honestly can't even recall anyone else.

I'm still waiting for Howard's Anthony's spinoff game...because we all know that would be full of so much win.

PROTIP: Boycotts are not as effective as throwing hissyfits.

If you don't see the vid for whatever reason, the egotistical man in it makes this point: imagine if people went and boycotted Transformers: WfC because it's publisher was amongst the Unholy Trinity of publishers. The message it would've sent Activision would've been less "We disapprove of your business practices and will deprive you of money until you change your ways", and more "We disapprove of your trying something new and adventurous and would prefer you just keep releasing CoD games". Either way, the publisher would not be affected, and High Moon would've been punished.

On the other hand, take Mass Effect 3, another game released by a part of the Unholy Trinity. People caused a ruckus over its lackluster ending, baking red blue and green muffins, donating to charity in protest, and suchlike. This made EA react, releasing press statements, releasing free DLC that attempted to fix the ending, and so forth.

Voting with your money is all fine and well, but that alone won't work. If a game is being released by a publisher you don't like, but the game peaks your curiosity enough, buy it, but don't stop letting up on the bitchfits and tantrums, because that's what makes the publishers sweat.

(Note: even when taking this advice, I'm still not gonna buy anything from Capcom, the last of the Unholy Trinity)

I really always just considered what happened with Mass Effect a complete fluke because, in all honesty, this rarely happens in the industry. Have there ever been any other instances where complaining about something long enough has caused the publishers to rethink their strategy and take direct, immediate action to correct whatever mistake is being whined about? We can't always count on them to listen to us...in all honesty, I don't think we can count on them to listen at all, most of the time.

We have people complaining about being ripped off with DRM, DLC and all that jazz on a daily basis, yet companies aren't changing their policies. You know when they do decide to do so? When gamers stop feeding them money, like how DC Universe Online and Star Wars: The Old Republic have gone free to play because less and less people renewed their subscriptions.

What happened with DCUO and TOR wasn't so much just because of lower subscription renewal rates and more because of the general direction all MMOs were going: free-to-play with premium features for paying players. WoW did something similar, allowing players to play up to a certain level for free, and even then they are more the exception than the rule in this day and age, since just about every other MMO is F2P.

I still think it played a bigger part in showing the companies that they needed to change to accomodate to a changing market. If people continued to pay, they'd have continued the games as payed subscriptions, no questions asked.

He's only saying that just to coax more people into using Origin. Fuck 'im.

What devs like these fail to realize is that they don't actually control yet whether digital services can completely replace the retail industry - ISPs do. And nobody's going to be able to fully replace retail as a viable gaming platform at the very least until you get enough fiber optic connections to basically render broadband as redundant as 56k is right now. And that's before you get into download limits and other such bullshit that ISPs have been pulling lately. That's the biggest reason why OnLive absolutely tanked and put the company on the verge of bankrupcy. Oh whoops, spoilers - OnLive absolutely tanked and put the company on the verge of bankrupcy.

Incidentally,

Quote:

In fact, Soderlund said that the majority of EA's revenues still come from retail and that it remains a viable business model. But while he still has a preference for the physical, he acknowledged that he's not representative of the "new generation of gamers," and said that game companies that fail to adapt to changes in the industry risk becoming irrelevant.

"I look at it as evolution. Looking back five years and looking at today, there is such a vast difference to how I consume entertainment and how I connect with people. We just have to embrace these changes rather than be afraid of them. I think some people are so surprised by the changes that are happening that they become afraid of it," he said. "They try to stick to what they know and that's the danger. If you don't adapt you become irrelevant. I absolutely believe that's the case."
This is the most hilariously hypocritical PR bullshit I've ever seen coming out of a gaming company. Stay classy, EA.

...I don't get it. Why is he comparing hardware and software sales? Does he honestly think an entire hardware platform will bomb just because of a few select software titles happen to be launching around the same time? Y'know, as opposed to the massively lucrative holiday season where it's destined to sell best? I honestly expected better than such baseless strawmen coming out of Sessler.
