You can sell your personal legally-obtained license to the software to another person.
It's not quite as simple as that, though. You kinda have to consider why the used game market exists - essentially because the games come cheaper than firsthand sales. Then you have to consider why secondhand sales are cheaper to begin with - something I can't claim to know the exact reason for to be honest, but one could say a number of factors can potentially devalue the hard copy of the game, such as the condition of the box, boxart, documentation and the disc itself, or whether any but the lattermost are even there anymore. Obviously these aren't even factors in a digital download, as data can't be devalued in any manner besides its source (and I get the feeling services like Steam would get in a bit of shit if it ever came down to the files on their servers spontaneously corrupting like that), so I really can't see them selling at any less than the existing retail price. And by that point it completely defeats the point of a digital used gaming market because it'd be less of a hassle just to buy a game and download it on your own, unless a digital service actively wants to screw itself out of due sales for no good reason.

I get that they're doing this for principles a bit beyond this, but I can't help but feel there's a bit of apples-and-oranges going on with this specific scenario.

One point you neglected to consider with regards to software's fall in value would be age. Of course, this is a bizarrely fluctuating market, kinda like cars, where games of a current generation lose value as they become older, but regain value with each new generation introduced into the market, due to rarity and lack of product availability. With digital software, it could play the same, depending on how long a digital download service lasts (maybe in another two or three generations, there won't be Live Marketplace), but then again, one of the entire points of these services is to provide gamers with retro titles that are difficult to find physical copies of.

It all really depends on how it's handled, in the long run.

Next-gen will fail if it's not digital only

Says the man who makes a living making cellphone games. PLEASE BUY MY SHIT, IT'S ONLY RELEVANT IF EVERYONE ELSE IS DOING IT!

EDIT: Former Rare composer says Microsoft ruined Rare. Stating the obvious, but it needed to be said.

Were that a trait unique to secondhand sales, I wouldn't have. But it wasn't the value of the games themselves I was aguing so much as the dissonance in pricing between first and secondhand sales, which is the entire reason there is even a market for used games in the first place.

Regarding your first link, I found a big fucking image in the comments that I figured was interesting and relevant enough to post here. While the market for digital gaming certaintly is increasing, ditching hard media entirely this early would be absolutely suicidal.

Apple's newest iOS update has rendered many games unplayable. The cause? DRM.

Also, this guy at Sony is a smart guy.

Finally, some words of wisdom from Sony.

I like it when people use the word "gay" in any context other than a homosexual one - it only proves that they have the maturity of a five year old, as if their obsession with shooters didn't already do a good job of pointing that out. It's also pretty amusing that he pointed out Skyrim considering the fact that, y'know, it's set in the bloody medival era and doesn't even have muskets, let alone generic modern firearms.

But just for fun, let's play around with his logic a bit.

game - gun = gay
game + gun = -gay
game + gun + Arem = ???

Pachter's at it again, but he may actually be right, for once.

Square Enix's Julien Merceron says that this gaming generation has been too long, ultimately citing it as "the biggest mistake Microsoft and Sony have ever made."

PSO2 proves as much. For once, Pachter's not just shitting out his mouth.

I'm still pissed that I can't play PSO2 yet. Though, this time it's because my bandwidth got overshot after having to re-download everything from Xbox LIVE. I have to wait until it goes back down to a reasonable number before I can resume the download D:

And then I'll have to put up with the same bullshit error message, I bet... though hopefully this time, there will be solutions that are actually fucking useful.

But, now for something from Destructoid's Jim Sterling, courtesy of his weekly Jimquisition segment on The Escapist: "The Xbox 360 and PS3 are just very crap PC's."

Katsuhiro Harada, lead producer of the Tekken series, remains adamant against Bandai Namco's repeated pushes to offer additional content as paid DLC. He says that, if he was offered a single choice between either quitting, or providing paid DLC, he would most likely choose to quit.

This doesn't rule out additional DLC in the Tekken games, but rather applies that said DLC would be completely free so long as he holds the reins.

EDIT: Current video game sales in Japan for the week, provided by Famitsu. Pokemon Black & White 2 remains at the top position from last week while, rather unfortunately, it seems that Anarchy Reigns isn't doing so well. That said, those sales seem to be of the 360 version and Japanese gamers are not exactly known for supporting Microsoft's consoles, or anything foreign to them, for that matter. Though, the lack of any info on the PS3 version hints that it's either not released in Japan yet, or, surprisingly, the PS3 version of the game is doing worse in terms of sales.

Not quite sure, really.

Valve talks about its odd development cycle. Now it's called "Valve Time." Still no word on the next instalment of Half-Life.

I don't get it... games not coming out until October are being advertised right NOW in commercials. Assassin's Creed 3 and Resident Evil 6 have already aired commercials.

It's the Triple-A Hype Machine at work.
