Not just that, but pretty much everything he's saying in that interview is true. Warren Spector is one of the rare few Western developers who carries the old ideals that made gaming fun back in the day. People may have hated the first Epic Mickey, but they have to admit that there was a lot of love and innovation poured into it and whatever problems they had with it had to have been miniscule in comparisson to the grandness of the game.

Ultraviolence is my favourite Doom difficulty level. Fuck you. >=(

I'll just quote my response on the SSMB thread seeing as I can't be fucked to make an original reply right now.

I'm hesitant to comment on this, because I'm honestly not sure of what exactly Spector is trying to suggest we do about it. Doing away with spectacle violence entirey is incredibly narrow-minded bullshit for reasoning that's fundementally no different from "OH GOD WON'T SOMEONE THINK OF THE CHILDREN", so for his sanity I'm really hoping that's not what he's suggesting. I'm not implying that there isn't a more tasteful way to go about it, but people generally play games to enjoy themselves, and if someone gets a kick out of shooting someone else in the head and watching his eyeballs pop out then I'd say the game is doing its job just fine, maturity be damned.

The problem, if anything, is not that this kind of escapism exists, but because the market is too far skewed towards a certain demograph right now. I'd have less of a problem with teenage fantasies made in videogame form if there weren't so damned many of them. Videogaming's a fairly young industry compared to other mediums though, so I feel if a solution ever comes for that, it'll be one that comes of age. Either that or the parties responsible will bleed themselves dry Atari-Crash style on games that look exactly the fucking same and leave most everyone else relatively scot-free. Who knows.

More or less; there's just too much samey garbage going around and it's making it seem like this is all there is to the industry. While Spector may or may not be completely against violence in gaming, the point still stands that there's just so much blatant overuse of it today that it's engulfing the market.

I thought we had a separate topic for videogaming bullshittery in Australia, but I can't find it, so maybe that was back on SoaH (OH GOD I SAID IT SHUN THE LUFFEH)

ANYWAY, bam. Two days ago, the age old debate on R18+ ratings for video games in Australia (which has been the result of many banned or watered down games because, as BL just said, think of the fucking children and fuck the adults) has finally landed on a positive result. Starting January 1st, Australia will be getting an R18+ rating nationwide.

...five bucks says that the Classification Board still tries to screw us over.

I wasn't sure where exactly to post this, since it doesn't fit in the Wii U topic and I don't believe we have, or really need, a topic for Nintendo Direct. I'mma toss it here for now, I guess.

Nintendo Japan is getting set to air another Nintendo Direct later today. I read about this earlier, but just received a Letter Box letter from Satoru Shibata from Nintendo of Europe. Times are as follows:

Japan: Thursday, 22nd June at 1 PM JST
Australia: Thursday, 22nd June at 2 PM AEST
North America: Wednesday, June 21 at 9 AM PDT/Thursday, 22nd June at 12 AM EDT
And just for Seeco: Thursday, June 22nd at 7 AM AST

This will be streamed live on either Nintendo of America's Nintendo Direct page, or Nintendo of Europe's page. As always, if you miss it, it can watched normally afterwards at any time.

There will be no Wii U info shown, only DS, Wii and 3DS.

Thee's something that Reggie Fils-Aime talked to Kotaku about, that he not only loves to hear, but concerns him infinitely every time. No matter what Nintendo shows, everyone always says "what else?"

Also, some asshole on Twitter took flaming bunch of words to Masahiro Sakurai over Nintendo's decision to get Bandai namco's help on the new Smash Bros., not only calling them incompetent and saying that they shouldn't be involved, but also said that Sakurai should relinquish his position on the project. Sakurai's response is priceless.

Knock off looking down on them with narrow-minded thinking.

Also, also, Nintendo Power's "Wii Essentials."

I am missing 7 of those Wii titles and two of those WiiWare titles. Don't have any of the VC titles yet, thought I'm not sure about getting all of them just yet.

EA's at it again. Just look at all of those user comments xD

EDIT: Keeping in tune with EA: Criterion Games, the studio that created and developed the Burnout franchise and also developed the recent Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit, now has full developmental control over the whole NFS franchise, starting with Most Wanted, which is currently in development. Whether this means good or worse for one of EA's longest running and most popular franchises remains to be seen. Hell, maybe Criterion will be able to pull NFS away from the one-game-a-year bullshit.

More infoness. Firstly, the developers and producer's for SEGA's Rhythm Thief and the Emperor's Treasure on Nintendo 3DS have stated that, not only do they want to make a sequel, but also want to release a Wii U version.

Also, list of exhibitors showing off at TGS 2012.

EDIT: Activision has shut down Radical Entertainment. And future instalments of Square Enix's Final Fantasy franchise will be employing "Western developmental strategies," potentially even outsourcing to Western studios in the future. Oh, right, have a source.

A new game console is in development. Titled "Ouya," it utilises the Google Android OS, will retail at $99 and the featured games will be entirely free to play. Oh and anyone who purchases it will also receive a dev kit that will allow them to "hack" the console as they please.

...The fuck?

EU court officially rules that the sale of used digital games is legal.

...so basically it's a PC in a box then? Why not just get a PC? How do they even intend to make money off this thing when it's so stupidly cheap and the software literally costs nothing, anyway? Just screaming "hey hackers, it's legal to toy around with this thing!" isn't exactly going to help this thing sell.

Umm.

How is it even possible to sell an entirely digital game used? It just boggles my mind to consider how that could work and not be ridiculously exploitable.

You can sell your personal legally-obtained license to the software to another person.

Maybe the ruling is a way to basically make them more maleable, i.e. allowing people to sell/trade/whatever their digital games in the future.
