That's stupid.
A lot of people say random crazy shit when they're playing competitively with each other in a group with other guys. If it slipped out when playing anywhere else, well... deal with it.

I can't really agree with that, there is no reason to trash talk your opponent and if it is making them uncomfortable then you should stop.
The fact that you are playing a video game doesn't give you a license to be a dick to someone.

Edit: nm, if it's public being aired yeah it's wrong, just the reactions got me going.

I've been in groups having a great time that talking like that jokingly all the time, it's not like it means anything. When you're around extroverted people with an entertaining sense of humor, you can have funny little back and forths. The other dude wasn't offended from what I heard, he was kind of joining in on it while some random dude in the background started getting offended like a soccer mom at a rock concert.

"Get in that ass!". Does that actually count as sexual harassment in this context in any way if it's between two people joking around? The second time it was using the word "gay", wish people would get over that already. The issue (if you can even call it one) has already developed 3 topics on Kotaku.

What's with all the PC-ness? What the hell is going on here and why do people even care? I'm not really the type to say shit myself during a match, but with certain people it's fun to hear a little back and forth "I'm going to get your ass" talk. It's not like these guys were angry and going over the top or anything. And even if they were I couldn't care less.

This is real sexual harassment...

Did you read the article Havoc?
Not only was this at a filmed event but someone was spending it just filming the female competitor's tits and the insults got bad enough that she forfeited the match.

Yes, there's no problem doing it in your own home because nobody will even fucking know you're doing it.
No, there is never any excuse at all for doing it anywhere else.

Most of it, from a different source. I thought it was some sort of small streaming thing that not too many people even watch or something.... never even knew they had events like that aired to many people.

I dunno about you guys, but when talking about fighting game communities, comments like this just make me fucking snap:
Quote:

You can't. You can't because they're one and the same thing. This is a community that's, you know, 15 or 20 years old, and the sexual harassment is part of a culture, and if you remove that from the fighting game community, it's not the fighting game community

Not just because the act of beating the absolute fuck out of someone is frequently likened to an act of rape in a fighting game (though that in itself is pretty questionable, depending on the extent) - moreso, because this is literally the only defense mechanism I see a fighting fan use when confronted about something. The fighting community as a whole seems to value tradition over everything else, even common sense, to such an extent that any other community would simply be heckled if they suggested anything of the same calibre.

"Yeah, we're sexist twats who probably couldn't fuck our way out of a test tube anyway, but hey, it's always been that way so we don't care."
"We like to waste money on games that look and play almost identically to previous games and fangasm over characters that are so similar to one another that they would ordinarily be considered completely redundant, because that's the traditional thing to do"
"We find it perfectly normal to have to execute move inputs that literally dwarf the fucking Konami Code in the space of less than a second because we've been playing these games since before intuitivity existed. What are you, some kind of pussy?"

Does it really not bother these people with the way they set this ridiculously elitist bullshit up whenever the community is confronted about something, and does it seriously not bother anyone else that they consider this shit normal despite some of their standards practically having been set by fucking cavemen? I've tried to understand how people can put up with this shit, but honestly, just trying to comprehend their behaviour sometimes makes me feel like I'm losing brain cells.

There's a huge difference between in-room banter between friends because there is no malice there.
When you are at a tournament, there should be no shit-talking at all because the insults will become real. It's just basic human decency!

I'm going to have to side with BL and MC on this; this is neither what the fighting game community is about, nor is this any kind of "comradery" between gamers. Trash talking is part of the package, yes, when playing with good friends you know, within the limits of not offending those surrounding you and when it's in good fun. Just because someone WORKS with you, doesn't mean they'll take the same kind of crap that someone you know well will and don't tell me this is how complete strangers behaved with each other in the arcades. Doing this shit online is one thing, since anonimity protects the aggressor from any repurcussions, but this is flat out sexual harassment; the girl was clearly uncomfortable and irritated with this guy, but seeing as he's essentially her "boss", she was trying to be civil and put up with it. I will say that she should have put her foot down a lot earlier and not made herself the target of abuse because, in the end, she looked like she had no self respect.

In other news:

http://www.theverge.com/2012/3/1/2836595/gamestop-ceo-sony-and-microsoft-could-have-cut-us-off-a-long-time-ago

Gamestop essentially talks about how the sudden "issue" with used games is complete BS and how it could have been prevented long ago if it really was.

http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/sns-201203011028usnewsusnwr201202290229jailbreakingmar01,0,5164629.story

Sony and Microsoft wants to battle against gamers rights to jailbreak their consoles. Good luck with that, we'll see how far it goes.

That is just some seriously fucked up shit up there.

This is a really great video that talks about how the market has stagnated because people are constantly allowing publishers and devs to get away with BS by throwing their money at them. The real meat of it starts at around 10:15.

A brilliant article by Jim Sterling discussing gaming journalism; how it's perceived and what it really is:

On-Disc DLC discussion post.

I think the best comment on this issue is from "MirrorOfKagami" down near the bottom of the page. I'll quote it under a spoiler tag due to the size.

Click for big text post!

Both the OP and above commenter provide interesting sides to the discussion, but to be perfectly frank, I'm sick of the "you paid for the right to use the content" argument.

While (as I said earlier) I can sort of understand making DLC as a stopgap between finishing development and the game actually being available in stores, I find it very hard to justify charging customers for content that was already done when the game was put out there
Nothing except the whim of the developer says that this was not supposed to be part of the final package, and it is there on the hardware that you had to pay for

Super Street Fighter IV and Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 are not made for the average joe who wants to pick up a fighting game, mash buttons and just goof off. They're really for the people who, at any level, put in the time and extra effort to practice and try to get better, no matter their actual skill level. While Capcom's said that it wants to avoid a disc-based Super Ultra Whatever the Frick Ever Street Fighter X Tekken, if that ever gets released, it won't be for most gamers.

Bull. Fucking. Shit.

If anyone here bothered to read the article I wrote on the blog about fighting games, then you'll know my stance on who the target audience was for both of the games mentioned above; they're for weaker players and are easily exploitable, lacking complexity. And while Capcom has said they want to avoid enhanced discs of fighting games, they'll probably still pull that shit out of their ass the first chance they get. Sure, it might not be with SFxT since they're already nickel and diming people with disc locked content, but it'll come up eventually.
