And all I've gotta say is that I'm looking forward to whatever Double Fine gives us in the end. It's one of the last few vestiges of quality Westeren developers I have an interest in.

I like it when people use the word "gay" in any context other than a homosexual one - it only proves that they have the maturity of a five year old, as if their obsession with shooters didn't already do a good job of pointing that out. It's also pretty amusing that he pointed out Skyrim considering the fact that, y'know, it's set in the bloody medival era and doesn't even have muskets, let alone generic modern firearms.

But just for fun, let's play around with his logic a bit.

game - gun = gay
game + gun = -gay
game + gun + Arem = ???

Here's a really interesting article on the whole "used sales are bad" thing. It also addresses how sometimes, buying new doesn't give money to the developer either:

http://www.1up.com/news/forget-games-games-sales-don

And here's an article outlining how Hironobu Sakaguchi thinks HD graphics are excessive in gaming:

http://beefjack.com/news/sakaguchi-hd-graphics-are-excessive-for-videogames/

On the above, I recently watched an episode of Extra Credits that talks about how developers should be focusing more on improving aesthetics instead of blowing off tons of money on graphical fidelity since it's what a gamer talks about when they refer to "graphics". The confusion between the two has led us to the current HD arms race where devs constantly try to one up each other with their graphical budgets when instead, they should be trying to refine a game's aesthetic style to be more in line with what the consumers want. A game can look "realistic" without the kind of excessive abuse of graphics engines we see today.

Yet self publishing rarely works for a company because, aside from the lack of tons of money, they have no basic comprehension of how to show control, restraint or even manage themselves effectively, as we can see plainly with what happened with Duke Nukem Forever.

I used to be supportive of XBLA, but then Tim Schafer taught me that it takes forty thousand US dollars to upload a fucking patch.

I ask about 2011, a year in which the studio released three excellent titles. Is that success? Is that what this is all about? “Double Fine is a company that values its independence,” says Schafer. “We really value our employees…” there’s a slight pause, and then Schafer shouts at someone else in the room, “why are you looking at me like that?! Of course I value you!” There is muffled laughter in the background and we’re back on. “And we have a responsibility to make things happen for ourselves. It’s not enough to come up with great ideas, you have to come up with great business ideas, too. You have to protect yourself.

“But yes, we’ve been trying all these different projects, and it’s great – we have multiple teams and multiple leaders like Lee Petty, Brad Meer and Nathan Martz, people who are new, who can take on these projects. We’ll try out iOS devices, or maybe free-to-play, we’ll try licenses. We’re having a lot of fun doing it.”

Double Fine, then, is making the most of the digital era, coping a feel of all the new platforms and delivery methods. But there are frustrations, too. Schafer has watched the Xbox Live Arcade and PSN services dwindle away from fantastically promising beginnings to troubled, even fading services. “Ever since I played Geometry Wars I thought, what a great new portal,” he enthuses.

“But it seems that this year, the idea didn’t explode like it should have. Back when Castle Crashers came out, it seemed it was going to grow and grow. I just wish there was more support, more marketing, more placement on the dashboard. It could have been our own little Sundance Film festival, a great sandbox for indie development.

“But the indie community is now moving elsewhere; we’re figuring out how to fund and distribute games ourselves, and we’re getting more control over them. Those systems as great as they are, they’re still closed. You have to jump through a lot of hoops, even for important stuff like patching and supporting your game. Those are things we really want to do, but we can’t do it on these systems. I mean, it costs $40,000 to put up a patch – we can’t afford that! Open systems like Steam, that allow us to set our own prices, that’s where it’s at, and doing it completely alone like Minecraft. That’s where people are going.”

So wait, just a few days ago, Schaffer put up the challenge of getting funding from fans to put into their own projects...this same amount of $40 000 is what publishers expect developers to shell out just to patch a game? Good god, what the fuck happened to the industry?

Actually, Schafer's goal was $400k. That said, $40k for a fucking XBLA patch? What in the actual fuck, Microsoft?
