I never did try Shenmue 2... that'd be a good opportunity.

Between this and Deus Ex, I'm not sure Squeenix understands how crowdfunding works.

Nah, it's a good idea.

Too many niche localized games don't make their money back.

This is a good way to actually get something localized. It's not like they have to develop an entire game, where they can sometimes become abandonware. The brunt of the work

I would greatly prefer to see localization kickstarters for japanese games than more projects from ex-devs who keep showing shlock. This actually gives people a chance to try to get something they wanted but couldn't have, and a chance to prove the size and thirst of their fanbase.

Wouldn't it make more sense to just give the project to smaller localisation teams like XSEED or Aksys and have them release niche stuff like this in the West to test the waters? I know Namco used to regularly use XSEED for smaller projects, especially on the Wii, though to be fair, I wouldn't call most of them commercial successes, despite them being really great games.

That's exactly the reason why it's a decent idea to use crowdfunding for localization.

So Bubsy 1 & 2 got added to Greenlight recently.

Now I know what you're all thinking, and before you start laughing I'm going to interrupt: the original creator of the franchise has cancer, and is almost certainly re-releasing the games to pay off his $36k medical costs.

No laughing here, I loved the first Bubsy game when I played it as a kid. I mean I was horrible at it, but hell yes, I'd buy it. Doubly so if the funds will go to the creator's medical bill.

The originals were decent games, but the entire concept of another mascot with attitude in the 90s to fend for itself against a plethora of competitors was what killed him off in the first place. Add to that his jump to 3D was atrocious at best and we can all understand why Bubsy went the way of the dodo. If his games go up on Steam, I'd buy them, no questions asked.

A Price of Games Journalism, a really great write up by Kotaku on how they've dealt with being blacklisted by Ubisoft and Bethesda and how gaming journalism is affected by such things.
