tri-Ace, the developer of titles such as Star Ocean, Resonance of Fate and Valkyrie Profile, has been acquired by Nepro Japan and has been shifted to developing mobile games exclusively. tri-Ace was also assisting SEGA with the development of Phantasy Star Nova for PlayStation Vita. |

Examining the shooter genre and why the two weapon limit needs to go. Also, Zombie Incident is an MSX inspired 3DS eShop title that really takes you back to those dats. |

I wouldn't say this is a cancer on the genre so much as it is a gameplay quirk and a balancing trait. If you have a game in which every player can use every weapon at every time, it leaves virtually no room for a contextual and/or environmental advantage in a firefight. That's the difference the two weapon system makes - it creates a need to exploit the environment. Consider a sniper, for sake of example - in a 90's shooter environment, fighting back is as simple as switching weapons and counter-sniping, but if you have an AR or a shotgun, you have to actively move yourself out of the opponent's dominant field (which in the sniper's case, is large spaces of land with nothing to hide behind) and approach it in an environment that benefits you instead (which in a shotgun's case is very enclosed areas with a lot of corners, and a minimal amount of distance to cover at any time to hit point blank). And that's a decision any good player and designer should be able to make for themselves - if it's immediately made clear that there's going to be a lot of shooting from high windows or walking across wide open plains, it's only their own damned fault if they don't read the cues and ditch their shotgun. That's not to say firearm kelptomania doesn't have its own advantages - what I'm trying to say here is that one isn't inherently superior to the other, and I don't think it's particularly wise to accept shameless nostalgia pandering as an argument in the grand scheme of things. By all means, invite more games to level out the variety in the genre, I wouldn't complain because it is admittedly getting stale at some points, but let's not do it atop a high horse and proclaim it's better for everyone just because it was done first. |

But the article DOESN'T do that, it states that, just like 90s shooters were good for what they were, modern shooters have their own niche in the market and are fine. He just merely states that the two weapon limit needs to be replaced with something more practical and efficient to give players a bit more variety and options on the go, considering with modern shooters, weapons are your only tool in the field. He suggests using a small number of weapons with maybe alternate firing modes or even gun attachments, like a grenade launcher on an assualt rifle. It's a practical solution that doesn't seem as obnoxious as forcing the player to pick two things to go with for long stretches of time just because it SEEMS more realistic. |

Oh I know, it just seems to be the usual stance most people take on the subject, so it seemed worth stating. You can already do this, just not in the sense that they're directly attached to the gun. There's a very good reason melee and grenades are given their own buttons in nearly all shooters these days, as opposed to just another weapon you have to scroll through - because it's a very basic convenience that realistically or otherwise, you shouldn't have to free up a spare hand to use. That's even assuming the game doesn't have some personalized gimmick as a fifth option or more - like, just as an off the top of my head example, Halo's armour augmentations. I guess I can see why somebody would think like that though - the guns are the face of the game and the genre, even if player functionality isn't strictly limited to them all the time. As far as the balance between weapon specializations, quantity and "realism" goes, though, I feel like Far Cry 2 shines as the best standard by far - not just because you get 3-4 of them, but because each of them is its own tier, and each of them has a weapon that is varying degrees of effective in a specific field (every tier, for example, has a silent weapon, an explosive weapon and a full-auto weapon at least, with shotguns and snipers spread decently between the remaining two any given time). There's plenty of variety to choose from, but it's just constricting enough that you still need to be careful not to overspecialize in a specific field. Best of both worlds in my book. Honestly, if there's any gaming sin shooters as a genre need to cut down on, it's to consider why any game needs more than two goddamned types of assault rifles. It's a gun that shoots bullets really fast - what quantifiable differences otherwise do they think they can spread across five of them? Edited by Blacklightning, Feb 24 2015, 09:49 AM.

I'd be fine with maybe having a big machinegun and a small one that you can dual wield. Aside from that, yeah, not seeing the point, especially with how it tends to be the default weapon and how it gets whored out. Oh no wait, this one has burst fire and better accuracy! Nigga, make one gun that you can attach a scope to and add alternate firing modes, why you gotta sell us fifty machineguns? |

Well, when you think about it, it's not really surprising when a game seemingly built just to whore out the military industrial complex is so hell-bent on showing off as much of the latest in gun tech, even if they're functionally redundant in the realms of a videogame where ammo is completely interchangable so long as it's in the same basic category. Which is why, if outright scifi or cartoon weapons aren't options, I think games should focus on the low tech spectrum a lot more often. Because in much the same light, videogames are able to project some strange, manly catharsis onto them that levels them out - kind of like how the double shotgun is pretty much the most used weapon in Doom II, or how the muskets Maximilian Roivas uses are somehow stronger than modern handguns in Eternal Darkness, despite how impractical they'd otherwise be. Hell, you can do a lot of crazy shit with junk weapons, even if it feels like they should spontaneously combust if you look at them wrong. Just go full on James Bond with them and see what you can come up with. Grenades on strings. Bullets that spew gas en route to their destination. Landmines that can grow legs and chase people. Rockets that impale people and keep flying onwards with them in tow. I mean fuck, let's just make a shotgun that shoots acid. I made all that up in the space of maybe 10 minutes. I don't really care if it sounds silly as fuck, because it's still a badass kind of silly, and I'd much rather play with shit like that than another AK47 and "generic bullpup AR #9001".
