As far as I'm concerned, Mortal Kombat was the only good live action film adaptation of a videogame property. Damn thing was ahead of its time, incorporating both, stop motion and, then revolutionary CG (I think it was one of the first films (if not THE first) to have such extensive use of the green screen). It was also so influential, they actually took concepts from it and implemented them into the game series's canon, managing to be both, plot and character driven for a franchise based solely on people beating the living crap out of each other. The sequel was a massive turd though; effects were pretty dated, costumes were crap, actors were weak and the pacing/plot was garbage. The sets were nice for the most part, but the movie was a massive clusterfuck of trying to cram as much shit from like, three games into a 90 minute timeframe and failing miserably at it. Might have had something to do with Paul Anderson no longer being attached to the franchise, I dunno. Then they made a relatively weak TV show that lasted a season and an okay animated series that lasted about 13 episodes. |

Yeah, I think Threshold Entertainment really couldn't maintain that level of success with anything else they did. I think at some point they even had a website dedicated to how many horrific ways they could mutilate a Pikachu plushie back in the late 90's during the Pokémon boom. |

Seriously, fuck Australia. We were actually in a very similar boat some 15 years ago because a large part of the "market" depended on piracy. Now that piracy has become practically negligible, it's scaled down considerably and become much more reasonable over the years. |
